If money is tight, I would recommend a KJV as a primer & you can find one for $1 at Dollar Tree: King James Bibles - Dollar Tree, Inc.

I am not a paid spokesman for this store either. Seriously though, the KJV is a safe bet. Marxists would never want God’s word to be so affordable.
I have a PDf version of this Bible but I'm not sure if it is the best choice. It might be but I would like a second opinion. Money is also sort of rough right now. I'm in the process of starting another job so I have to hold out on spending. But darn, I'd really like an orthodox study bible since that's denomination I am in.

I did, and do. What questions do you have for me?
Nothing particular. I'm glad that modern Russia is not the same as the soviet era. Multitudes of Christians prayed to see the end of communist rule. It was a wonderful thing to see the Wall come down.

Here is an Orthodox critique of the King James originally written in 1995:

Which English Translation Of The Bible Should I Use?

Orthodox opinions will vary on English Bible translations but the KJV always seems to be considered to be acceptable. The New King James Version ( NKJV) is basically used for the New Testament in the Orthodox study Bible while the Old Testament was provided by various Orthodox priests, theologians etc. ( our semi retired, former parish priest worked on the Joshua translation & told me the NKJV is ok).

The Communists are not as far from power as one would hope. American foreign policy since about 2005 has aimed at restoring hostile relations with Russia, which gave the Communists a new lease on life they would never have otherwise had. There is a lot of popular nostalgia for what was actually good about the Soviet Union for ordinary citizens, and a lot of fading and wiped memory about the bad, and about how people who didn't toe the official line were treated.

Yes, that’s perfect. We aren’t a denomination.

I think the issue is finding a Bible that is based upon the Septuagint instead of the Hebrew Bible which doesn't have the extended canon. I'd like to find a Bible that has the extended canon but I cannot seem to find one. the closest I've been able to get to is something called the common English bible with apocrypha and there aren't any notes in that one. I'd like a Bible with notes in it. I have a study Bible called the ESV study Bible by crossway but that is based upon the Hebrew texts so it doesn't have the rest of the bible in it.

Generally if you look for Catholic Bibles they will have the extended canon and also use some of the textual variants that we prefer elsewhere. However, they will not typically be wholly based on the Septuagint, but that really isn't a requirement for us. And the Catholic canon is very slightly smaller than ours.

interesting. I'm still trying to wrap my head around Eastern Orthodoxy in general. From where I live, it's very hard to find people who can give me good advice. The only people I find are southern baptists, non-denominational, Methodists, and Presbyterians. The closest Greek Orthodox church is several miles away from where I live so I have to find resources online and learn about Orthodoxy. I used to be a baptist but I now know better and I want to advance myself in that direction. It's very hard to do that, however, with protestants telling me otherwise; it's quite discouraging as you know. I just want to learn about the church. I need the basics most importantly. The few websites that are around do help, but I'd like a lot more information about true Christianity which is E Orthodoxy.

I'm guessing you are young enough to think that since that's the claimed theory, it must also be the practice.
Alas! Man is fallen and full of sin. The heart is deceitful and desperately wicked.
In reality, no, the workers do not actually own - and more importantly control - the means of production. Discover Hilaire Belloc. What you want, but cannot impose, is distributism, not communism.

I dont believe in socialism. But I do know the basics, since I had to take an introduction sociology class in college. I believe in private property and the benefits a market economy brings.

Look to see if that Orthodox church closest to you has a website. If it's good to go (and not a schismatic "Orthodox" sect), you should reach out to the priest and explain your situation. Perhaps, he will guide you on what you should do and how you should practice the faith.

The KJV Apocrypha can probably be found at Barnes & Noble ( where I got mine) or ordered from Amazon. It is sad that these books were cut from the KJV since they were originally there and remain as part of the lectionary of the Anglican book of common prayer.

Is it possible that part of this is formed by the remembrance of the Great Patriotic War? Though manipulated, Orthodoxy was genuinely revived as part of fighting for Mother Russia against the Nazis. ( I know you know this much better than I might).

The hammer & sickle flag is not good but it was the flag of the blood, sweat, & tears of those who died for Mother Russia for better or worse. This flag is actually anti Orthodox ( I think) yet if I was Russian, it would probably be part of my picture of what I would think in memory of my grandfather ( etc.) fighting in World War II.

What is your point? I know that but back during WW II, American Orthodox people would have seen a prayer for victory from Patriarch Sergius of Moscow in their prayer books. Times are usually tough; Sergius was probably revered then & later usually reviled to some degree.

Where are you located over there? Did you ever live under Soviet rule?
The Moscow region. I was married and spent my first six months here under Gorbachev.

It is true that Stalin relaxed his persecution of the Church during the War. He needed every able body, including the Orthodox, and he simply couldn’t afford to alienate them.
