• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Does anyone here have experience with C.Diff? It's an infection of the colon, often caused by taking antibiotics. In February I was prescribed clindamycin by my doctor, and a month later I started having really bad diarrhea. I was eventually diagnosed with c.diff and treated for it. However, although it's been a few months now, I still have stomach issues, and my gastroenterologist did some tests and said it's post-infectious IBS. It has been a hard road recovering from this illness.

Sorry to hear it. That can be nasty.

You need to take probiotics to rebuild a normal gut flora. At the very least, lots of "live" yoghurt, but probably stuff in capsules as well.

For future reference, while you are on antibiotics, you should take Saccharomyces boulardii probiotics (a kind of yeast). It builds a "temporary" gut flora, and keeps nasties like c.diff out. Then afterwards, you take probiotics to rebuild a normal gut flora.

Thank you for your reply Radagast. I'm eating lots of yogurt and also drinking kefir. My gastroenterologist specifically told me not to take S. Boulardii because it could cause a systemic yeast infection for me, as I have bleeding internal hemorrhoids (sorry for the TMI; those are another unpleasant after-effect of the c.diff).

Radagast is right. My best friends mother has had it on and off for years. It is highly contagious. A bleach solution is usually used to wipe all surfaces. I can't remember how long it can last on surfaces. The daughter never got it, but she was very careful to always wipe things down.

Thank you mmksparbud, I use bleach for cleaning. I read that the spores can survive for up to 5 months on surfaces. I have a lot of anxiety now surrounding this, it's a big challenge to manage the fears. My husband also has Crohn's disease and is taking immunosuppressant medication, so I have done everything I can to prevent him from catching it.

Then you are doing all you can. It should be a comfort to you that my friend never got the C-diff. She and her mom are still living together. The daughter has had many health issues throughout her life and was never able to marry or have children because of them. She spent all her money on doctors and could never afford to more out on her own. She finally had to go on disability a couple years ago. Her father died about 6 years ago it was after that the her mom got the c-diff. But despite the daughters weakened immune system, she still did not get it. I was never in any fear of her bringing it to me either, both of them were often in my home. Her mom has dementia and is in hospice at home now---but has had no C-diff for about a year, at least. Don't despair and don't give up, but don't get careless either.
