Hello Bedmunds, I'm praying for you.
This world (with its many lusts/pleasures) can be confounding for any Christian who desires to lead a godly life. We also get a lot of additional help (if you want to call it that) from the devil and his demons, because they hate us and, principally, because they hate God. They would, in fact, like nothing more than to see their temptations succeed and us fail/fall into sin. This is the reason that the Lord told us that His will for us is to be
sanctified ..
1 Thessalonians 4
3 This is the will of God, your sanctification...
Fortunately, the Bible gives us a number of helpful hints about how we are sanctified, that principally (first and foremost) we are sanctified by God's word ..
John 17:17, and that we are to "
renew our minds" in His word daily so that we can understand/prove what His will for us is ..
Romans 12:2.
Here are some other verses concerning this fact if you'd care to read them .. e.g.
Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:1-3, 119:105; 2 Timothy 2:15, 3:16-17; cf Deuteronomy 11:18-21. There are also these verses, the truth of which I have seen come true in my own life.
Psalms 119:9, 11
How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word. Thy word I have 'treasured' in my heart that I may not sin against Thee.
Remember too that the Lord is always on your side, as He loves you and wants to see you to beat the temptations that come your way (so that they do not become sins instead). He, in fact, promises that
1. He will not allow you to be tempted in a way that is too much for you to handle, and that
2. He will provide a
way of escape from every temptation that you encounter ..
1 Corinthians 10:13, so trust Him and look for the
ways of escape that He provides you with whenever temptations come your way.
He also tells us the take our tempting thoughts "captive", and to give them over to Him to deal with instead ..
2 Corinthians 10:5, again and again and again as necessary. This is one of the ways that we obey another one of His commands, to "
resist the devil", so that we can receive the promise that goes along with that command, that "
he will flee from you" ..
James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8-9.
And if/when you fail to resist temptation and you sin, remember to confess your sins to Him as He has promised to forgive you when you do, and to restore full fellowship with Him again, even when you sin and ask for forgiveness, over and over again ..
Matthew 18:21-22; 1 John 1:9.
God bless you! (
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)

p.s. - I came out of a VERY sinful life in my 20's when I became a Christian two months after my 30th birthday, and I faced a horrible "thought-life" because of it back then. What helped me get the stale, stinky garbage out of my mind and finally rid my mind of my horrible thought-life was memorizing certain verses and passages from the Bible (I used the
Topical Memory System by the Navigators, just FYI). The memorized Scripture pushed the stinky garbage to the back of my mind, and finally out of it altogether, PTL, because I filled it was something FAR better (Scripture). This also helps keep me from sinning, because every time I'm tempted and considering sinning, the HS brings several perfectly memorized verses to the front of my mind telling me why I shouldn't.
If you'd like to know more, or if you'd like to try memorizing Scripture and need some help getting started, just let me know.
