Instead of hijacking a thread about speaking in tongues, I felt it would be better to start an entirely new thread about other gifts that we receive from the Holy Spirit.

God is so good, and so infinite in His Wisdom for Him to match our gifts with the personalities He has given to us.  For instance, my personality is one of tending to be in control (just ask my hubby..cringe...), very outgoing and will talk to anyone at any time.  I remember in elementary school being the "leader of the pack" of girls; punching a boy in the 4th grade who said God wasn't real (hey!  I was young), and getting involved in debate and leadership positions in high school.

What are the gifts that God has bestowed upon me?  My primary gift is Evangelism, with leadership and prophecy right up there very close.  Where is He leading me now?  I've just taken on a leadership position at church, in a particular ministry that deals with visitors and those who are seeking. My need to talk about God to any and all is leading me to Seminary school, hopefully and prayerfully in the Fall.

So, there's many other gifts of the Spirit, and yes, I do believe that they're still alive and well and functioning if we allow them to.

Anyone else?

Well as I said earlier, I receieved the gift of healing from the spirit.  It would be great if I could heal others with laying on hands, but this is something I have to find out.

I received healing from the spirit.  After I was converted I had no need to smoke anymore, even though I was a chain-smoker and also smoked pot every day of the week.  I have no desire to go out getting drunk anymore either, I think alot of society have become unaware that being drunk is not good fun or a laugh.

I have recieved healing, but I don't know if I could ..for example lay hands on the sick to help them recover.

Hope that helps

I have the gift of teaching and pastoring. Also the gift of knowledge and wisdom (except it seems to only work when I am talking about others peoples lives.) Basically mostly teaching type gifts. Basically I am the type of guy who likes to be alone or in the company of some real good friends but small talk and large parties drain me. I am the type of Sunday school teacher who is not flashy but real informative and tries to apply all texts to the gospel and one's own spiritual transformation.

God has called me to teach his church. Not that I am anyone special or that there are no other teachers but that is the area he has gifted me. I have been called to be either a small church pastor or a minister of education at a larger church. I love it when I can disciple people and help them through the power of the Holy Spirit transform their spiritual lives.

I am being given the gift of knowledge, but at times I have a hard time bowing out and allowing God to lead. To me this is very different then the gift of wisdom, however, it is possible that I have this because I have given answers to people who have asked me questions that I think only God could have given and I never would have thought of the answer I gave in a million years (even though I gave the answer in a second). A year ago I couldn't have told you if Zechariah was in the OT or NT :D Now I can tell you at least three places where each subject is discussed. I can tell you the viewpoint of almost every major doctrine and why they have it. God is awesome!

I was prophesied the exact same prophecy by two people that didn't and couldn't have known each other in the exact same way and this was BEFORE I was reborn, so I thought they were both nuts! HALLELUJAH, GOD IS AWESOME!

I know where I'm headed and it's awesome to watch my life move in that direction even though I still don't see how I'm going to get where God is sending me, yet I still know it's going to happen. I'm just waiting on God to open the doors and I'll be elated to walk through them!

Blackhawk ~ I can't wait to hear about your adventures with the Lord!  He has truly gifted you.  I love reading what you have to say, and wish fervently I could meet you in person.  You have such a wonderful personality and such a servants heart!  I just love you to death {{{hugs}}}

That is extremely exciting JesusServant!!  Actually, it's more like a "WOW"!  I wish we could sit down face to face and have a conversation.  I'm thinking it would probably be pretty intense :)

God truly is unbelievably amazing!  I pray that I will always be in AWE of Him, and never lose that wonderment.  When I sit back and think of who I am, where I've been, what I've done, and what He's done with me.  Little ol' me!  I think to myself, you have got to be omnipresent to be able to handle dealing with me and everyone else!

How Awesome is our Lord?!

Is there anything He can't do?  No!  He took this broken and worthless human being, and re-created me to work for His Kingdom ~ to do His will, not my own.  A wayward sinner who has been saved and is going to go to Seminary school?  Wanting to preach to the poor in spirit and the broken-hearted?  Me?

Only God can do that.  I surely can't, but I can do anything through the awesome and merciful Spirit of the Lord.

How I love Him.........

Freely you have received freely you give. "Silver and gold have I none, but what I have I give unto you..." You never know until you try, perhaps you have the gift of setting people free from smoking or other types of addiction in the name of Jesus of course. Becos this deliverance has become so real to you since you experienced it firsthand, you will have the faith to minister to others suffering the same thing -- and set them free. So go ahead and minister to such people!

Well the one's I operate in the most are the tongues and interpretation. But some of the others I have operated in are wisdom and knowledge and discerning of spirits.

I'm told I'm a good leader but I don't really like to lead. I have been use in teaching also, but I believe I need to let the Lord train me more in that. I do like sharing with others what God has shown me.

Just thought I'd share my thoughts on this =)

We know that helping others, works of administration and teaching are also spiritual gifts (1 Cor 12:28) as well as encouraging, showing mercy, and other things mentioned in Romans 12:6-8. But I think there's more charismatic gifts than what's outlined in 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12. I know this may sound heretical but here's a few considerations:

1) the Greek word for spiritual gift is charisma, and apostle Paul seems to indicate that marriage and celibacy are both gifts as in 'charisma' (1 Cor 7:7).

2) Spiritual gifts were granted through the laying on of hands (1 Tim 4:14). I don't know if this is the only way in which it was done, but we see a 'laying on of hands' in the Old Testament:

Moses lays his hands on Joshua (Deut 34:9) and we find out he's filled with the spirit of wisdom.

Bezalel and Oholiab were filled with the spirit of God to create all sorts of crafts to be used during worship. Bezalel was specifically filled "with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts" (Ex 31:3, 35:31). This would probably imply that there's many other spiritual gifts like crafts, music and art.

Interesting isn't it?

Maybe we can even make the case that one of Jesus's spiritual gifts was carpentry?? ;)

 Yes, of the physical and the spiritual.  Ps 1 compares us to trees.  :p

As for my own personal experiences with the gifts of the Spirit, there's been times where I'd be praying and my hands would abnormally heat up.  I wouldn't do anything to cause them to heat up like that, but I notice that when I'm praying (out loud for others), there's times where I'd feel a bit sheepish while praying, but other times when I'd pray, I'd feel a bit 'empowered', sometimew I'd move from sheepwish to 'empowered' as I'm praying and occasionally my hands would heat up.

I talked to others about this phenomena and supposedly many who have the gift of healing experience this.  Additionally, I've been asking God to grant me this gift (1 Cor 12:31, 1 Cor 14:1) for edifying others (1 Cor 14:12), but I wasn't sure if I've been given it.  A pastor once laid his hands on me but even then I wasn't sure.

But then I came across something 'strange'

My name (Jason) in Greek is literally 'one who will heal'. You can confirm it here.  =)

Immediately afterwards, I began praying more often than before, and occasionally people would be telling me they feel better and such.  Maybe it's psychological, I wouldn't know for sure.

But I'm just glad they're feeling even the slightest bit better =)

God bless!

-Jason

i think must be an overall healer.....either physically or spiritually or mentally i seem to attract people who are in need of healing. I don't have a set gift though, sometimes its prophecy, sometimes its praying and things just happen, sometimes its laying on hands, most of the time i never have to touch a person, sometimes it feels like I take on the sickness of other people or their burdens in a literal sense.....sometimes i can sing and people have been healed, i do love to sing I think i actually feel closest to God when im singing, even if I'm just humming a tune alone. There are other things but i think mostly i must just be a healer with a mix of anything that is needed to heal someone.

A Word of Wisdom and A Word of Knowledge.

I'd like to address these questions to Quaffie, Hobie or SnuP first.

How do these gifts operate in a small setting like a cell grp? I'm trying to step into it by faith but am wonderin how it works. I'll share 3 experiences.

Once in care grp, a sister shared abt her dependence on medication to sleep. She had an operation some time ago and had difficulty sleeping and was dependant on doctor's drugs to sleep. As she shared, I felt a very strong impression on my heart/mind to tell her 2 things: 1) that this problem is temporary/will be fine soon. 2) To overcome her sleep problem, simply dont try so hard to sleep/relax dont think abt it.

Now, I suffered from sleep problems/fears and insomnia too some years back so I cld strongly emphatise with her and felt very strongly to tell her these 2 things.

Well I didnt there and then becos I was shy and afraid to speak out in the grp (quite a big grp), until I reached home that night. I just cldnt get it off my chest and so finally picked up the phone and called her to share these things with her. Of cse, she thanked me and was encouraged. That was Tue nite.

On Sunday at church, she came up to me and basically told me she's now "ok" and has no problems sleeping (without the drugs) and thanked me again for speaking to her that Tue night. I was rather surprised that she 'recovered' so fast.

So is this a gift of the Word of Knowledge ("temporary/will be over soon") and Word of Wisdom (dont try so hard to sleep, in order to sleep) in the simplest sense? Or just my mind? and coincidence?

Recently, a small prayer mtg in my careleader's home (1st I ever attended), one brother was sharing abt how an injured worker in his company was not satisfied with the compensation offered by the insurance company and was suing for much more, like half a million. As he was sharing, a verse came to mind: "Differing weights and dishonest scales, the Lord detests them both." Now, I had read this verse in Proverbs a day or 2 earlier and it just came to mind.

Well, I stepped out in faith (heck so wat if its just me) and told the grp abt it and how this brother shld entrust the matter to the Lord and let Him give what is due to this worker.

So is that what they call "a word" from the Lord? Or just coincidence and my own memory? Perhaps I'll have to see what is the outcome of the court case first.

We also prayed for a sister who was a nurse. I prayed for her protection (bcos of the deadly SARS pestilence in Singapore) and I specifically asked that John G Lake's experience -- when the plague virus was put on his skin under the microscope, doctors saw the germs die instantaneously -- wld also be her experience, shld she come into contact with the virus. After I prayed that, a sister said that was exactly what she had in mind too! We're both familiar with John G Lake's experience/story becos Pastor has shared it many times in services.

Is that being Òin the flow of the SpiritÓ as they call it or mere coincidence?

Of cse, I wld like to think these are not mere coincidences and I believe they arent. -- becos I'm beginning to see that it just takes very simple faith and starting out/stepping out somewhere at the simplest levels, when it comes to the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps, if I'm faithful to these very minor/non-spectacular/simple 'versions' of the gifts, the more spectacular ones will come later *L. Well, actually, what the heck, as long as it helps/rescues someone or edifies someone!

Well Andrew, drawing from my own well of experience LOL Yes, this is part of moving in the Spirit.

With the first story, I believe that especially since you had such a strong urging from the Holy Spirit, that was Him desiring to use you.  And the Word incouraged your sister and she responded and healing came.

It being the gift of knowledge and wisdom?  Possibly. :)  The steps of the righteous are ordered of the Lord, so we can conclude it is NOT coincidence.

With the second, like you  said, so what if it's just you and your memory.  But the Holy Spirit would not be able to bring something back to your remembrance if you never read it.  And. . .since it was from scripture, then it definately is a Word from the Lord.  Again, you incouraged your brother.  I don't think it even matters how the court case turns out. . .God takes care of His Own.

The third story. . .it's never a problem to pray the Word.  While we may come up with good sounding prayers and say good things I believe it especially benificial to pray what God says.  Such as PS 91  "Father, I thank You that as my sister dwells in Your secret place she abides under Your shadow.  You Lord, are her refuge and her fortress and in You she will put her trust".  etc, etc.

I believe Andrew, that God is using you to minister to others around you.   Knowing that we can do nothing in and of ourselves, we can step out with confidence that He will move through us. . .  we are merely the instrument in His hand.
