James 3:18 >

"Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . (James 3:18)

I thought the Bible says you reap what you sow, and this would mean you reap according to what kind of seeds you have sown. So, why does God's word here say "fruit" is sown by those who make peace??

Thank you for sharing whatever you have gotten about this :)

It is best to remember that fruits have seeds within them. Sowing righteousness in peace is a fruit of the Spirit that can spiritually be consumed and nourish life, and the seeds can be collected and sown in the dirt of other people's hearts to produce a good crop as well.

So being truly righteous feeds spiritually and breeds peace among people.

You do not eat seeds. The "fruit" is what God, by His Spirit, has produced in us. We are called to bear fruit, not produce it. When Christians know what the fruit should be and try to produce it, they will fail. As the Lord brings the fruit forth in our lives, we are then able to be a blessing to others.

The Amplified puts it this way: "18 And the seed whose fruit is righteousness (spiritual maturity) is sown in peace by those who make peace [by actively encouraging goodwill between individuals]."

Rather than looking foolish, it is best to check other translations and read in context. See, below and watch your problem with the text disappear.

James 3:13-18 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
True Wisdom
13 Are there any among you who are really wise and understanding? Then you should show your wisdom by living right. You should do what is good with humility. A wise person does not boast. 14 If you are selfish and have bitter jealousy in your hearts, you have no reason to boast. Your boasting is a lie that hides the truth. 15 That kind of “wisdom” does not come from God. That “wisdom” comes from the world. It is not spiritual. It is from the devil. 16 Where there is jealousy and selfishness, there will be confusion and every kind of evil. 17 But the wisdom that comes from God is like this: First, it is pure. It is also peaceful, gentle, and easy to please. This wisdom is always ready to help people who have trouble and to do good for others. This wisdom is always fair and honest. 18 People who work for peace in a peaceful way get the blessings that come from right living.

James 3:13-18 J.B. Phillips New Testament (PHILLIPS)
Real, spiritual wisdom means humility, not rivalry
13-16 Are there some wise and understanding men among you? Then your lives will be an example of the humility that is born of true wisdom. But if your heart is full of rivalry and bitter jealousy, then do not boast of your wisdom—don’t deny the truth that you must recognise in your inmost heart. You may acquire a certain superficial wisdom, but it does not come from God—it comes from this world, from your own lower nature, even from the devil. For wherever you find jealousy and rivalry you also find disharmony and all other kinds of evil.

17-18 The wisdom that comes from God is first utterly pure, then peace-loving, gentle, approachable, full of tolerant thoughts and kindly actions, with no breath of favouritism or hint of hypocrisy. And the wise are peace-makers who go on quietly sowing for a harvest of righteousness—in other people and in themselves.

James 3:13-18 Good News Translation (GNT)
The Wisdom from Above
13 Are there any of you who are wise and understanding? You are to prove it by your good life, by your good deeds performed with humility and wisdom. 14 But if in your heart you are jealous, bitter, and selfish, don't sin against the truth by boasting of your wisdom. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from heaven; it belongs to the world, it is unspiritual and demonic. 16 Where there is jealousy and selfishness, there is also disorder and every kind of evil. 17 But the wisdom from above is pure first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle, and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deeds; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy. 18 And goodness is the harvest that is produced from the seeds the peacemakers plant in peace.

2 Peter 1 Good News Translation (GNT)
1 From Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ—

To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have been given a faith as precious as ours:

2 May grace and peace be yours in full measure through your knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

God's Call and Choice
3 God's divine power has given us everything we need to live a truly religious life through our knowledge of the one who called us to share in his own[a] glory and goodness. 4 In this way he has given us the very great and precious gifts he promised, so that by means of these gifts you may escape from the destructive lust that is in the world, and may come to share the divine nature. 5 For this very reason do your best to add goodness to your faith; to your goodness add knowledge; 6 to your knowledge add self-control; to your self-control add endurance; to your endurance add godliness; 7 to your godliness add Christian affection; and to your Christian affection add love. 8 These are the qualities you need, and if you have them in abundance, they will make you active and effective in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But if you do not have them, you are so shortsighted that you cannot see and have forgotten that you have been purified from your past sins.

10 So then, my friends, try even harder to make God's call and his choice of you a permanent experience; if you do so, you will never abandon your faith. 11 In this way you will be given the full right to enter the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

12 And so I will always remind you of these matters, even though you already know them and are firmly grounded in the truth you have received. 13 I think it only right for me to stir up your memory of these matters as long as I am still alive. 14 I know that I shall soon put off this mortal body, as our Lord Jesus Christ plainly told me. 15 I will do my best, then, to provide a way for you to remember these matters at all times after my death.

Eyewitnesses of Christ's Glory
16 We have not depended on made-up stories in making known to you the mighty coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. With our own eyes we saw his greatness. 17 We were there when he was given honor and glory by God the Father, when the voice came to him from the Supreme Glory, saying, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased!” 18 We ourselves heard this voice coming from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.

19 So we are even more confident of the message proclaimed by the prophets. You will do well to pay attention to it, because it is like a lamp shining in a dark place until the Day dawns and the light of the morning star shines in your hearts. 20 Above all else, however, remember that none of us can explain by ourselves a prophecy in the Scriptures. 21 For no prophetic message ever came just from the human will, but people were under the control of the Holy Spirit as they spoke the message that came from God.

9 Listen, Israel, to the commands that promise life; pay attention, and you will become wise. 10 Why is it, Israel, that you find yourself in an enemy land? Why have you grown old in a foreign country? You are ritually unclean, like the dead; 11 you are already counted among the dead. But why? 12 It is because you have left the source of Wisdom! 13 If you had walked in God's ways, you would have lived in peace forever. 14 Learn where understanding, strength, and insight are to be found. Then you will know where to find a long and full life, light to guide you, and peace.

My children, do as I teach you and live at peace. Wisdom that is not expressed is like a treasure that has been hidden—both are useless.

It's interesting that our spiritual fruit can become seed to others, if that's what you mean. Thanks.

I think it can mean how God's word is the seed and this seed is sown in the fruit of the Holy Spirit. And so, the fruit carrying the seed is sown.

But our example can minister, also. Things we do can be seeds.

1 Peter 3:1-4 says that "without a word" wives can win a disobedient husband. Their example works. And in this scripture we have verse four >

"rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God." (1 Peter 3:4)

So, I see, their example and good conduct is sown in the "gentle and quiet spirit" of God's love. And so their seeds can spread with the effect of God's love. And Jesus is "gentle and lowly in heart," He says in Matthew 11:29. I see how this can connect with how God is pleased with "the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious" to Him. "Gentle and lowly" is like to "gentle and quiet". By being like Jesus in our sowing, we reap His results.

Those who declare their Christian faith to others are reminded at James 3:18 that our “fruit of righteousness” should be performed under peaceful conditions. Those that are sowing/planting “seed” (words) of peace about the “good news” (Luke 2:10) need to be careful not to be hypocritical, quarrelsome, argumentative, impartial, and so forth. Otherwise, the “seed” being planted may never sprout.-Luke 8:5-11.

These scriptures may help get a clearer sense/understanding: Matthew 7:15-20, John 15:1, 2, Romans 7:4; Galatians 5:22, 23; Philippians 1:10, 11, Hebrews 13:15.
