Fear Obligation and Guilt (FOG) is used by some religious groups to keep the membership IN and worldly ones OUT. The object of fear is loss of eternal life, the obligation is to follow the teaching and demands of the religious leadership and their official pronouncements, the guilt is generated by any thought, action, or inaction that is not approved by the religion's teachings. FOG is powerfully blinding for those who know no better and have no clear vision of alternatives to the religion that holds them captive.
Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) is used by some religions, usually the same ones that use FOG, to attack those on the OUTSIDE. The focus of the fear in this case is fear about loss of salvation and worldly people and their wicked ways, things like drunkenness, drug addition, sexual immorality, dissolute living, and loss of a caring community to help one through hard times and build up faith and healthy righteous standards in your own life. The focus of the uncertainty is one's future and one's self. Such religions encourage humility and doubt about one's self worth, abilities, safety, and future life thus making members dependent on the religious community in which they live - it is their ark of safety, so to speak, and the outside is filled with imagined fears, demons, and wickedness. The doubt is focused on everything that comes from the outside world thus news stories that reflect on the religion are regarded as the work of liars and false witnesses, fake news, and what is said by former members is especially untrustworthy because such persons have become wicked apostates who will do almost anything to discredit the religion that they left and towards which they allegedly feel hatred. FUD keeps insiders in by raising the question "where else can we go?" and the implied answer is "Nowhere, you (the church or whatever) have the words of eternal life".
Most religions do not use FOG and FUD or if some do they do so only sporadically and fairly ineffectively but a few are masterful users of FOG and FUD and keep their members virtual prisoners by means of them. Nevertheless FOG and FUD are often present in members' minds even if they are not widely used by their religion. Many questions about science and progress through technologies and in fields like medicine are called into question by means of FOG and FUD within a religious community. Even things like anti-vaccination can find a home in a slightly FOG & FUD group. So beware readers, check your environment for FOG and FUD to see if you are being manipulated by others.
