The GIFT of God is eternal life. It can't be earned.

Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
And again, we are not saved by works and neither are we saved without works. However, baptism for the remission of sins does save us if we endure to the end.

3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the [LDS]Gospel.
Articles of Faith 1
(New Testament | James 2:14 - 17)

4 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Yes--but He kept the commandments from his youth.
And Jesus LOVED him:

(New Testament | Mark 10:18 - 21)

18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

Of course Jesus loved him, He loves us all. Point is---he kept the commandments---and it still was not enough.

(New Testament | 1 John 2:5 - 6)

5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Has nothing to do with what I said. (I corrected my spelliing on that)

Your right, he still needed to sell all that he had and come and pick up his cross and follow Jesus. Then he would have treasures in heaven. Jesus was talking to a rich young ruler, and gave him instructions personally that do not necessarily apply to each and everyone of us. But if we are not keeping the commandments and are not following Jesus, we are not going to be given his grace in this life or in the life to come.

What is so onerous about keeping the commandments? Are you not keeping the commandments and following Jesus? Do you not repent if you fall off the path and get back on your feet and move forward cleansed by the grace of Jesus? This is not a guilt trip or a forced march, but a real life of trying to do the will of Jesus, helping your fellow man and making the world a better place by the time you leave it.

We are not perfect yet, but if we continue on the path that Jesus has laid out, and by his grace we will be.
This is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Believe in him, love him, keep his commandments, repent, and stay on the path, endure to the end of the race, trust that his grace will lift you up and give you eternal life with him. It is quite beautiful.

I believe that striving to keep the commandments is what God wants and expects us to do. Did the young man live the commandments perfectly? As you said there was more he could do to live them perfectly.

Enduring to the end in Mormonism means being a "righteous" Mormon to the end; that is rebellion to the True God.

I know who doesn't know God:
(New Testament | 1 John 2:4)

4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

You don't know who doesn't know Him. You'd better pray about your unloving attitude.

And apparently you don't even know God yourself or you wouldn't have diverted your answer from the question that was asked.

How is that rebellion? The Bible states:

(New Testament | Matthew 10:22)

22 And ye shall be ahated of all men bfor my cname's sake: but he that dendureth to the end shall be saved.

(New Testament | Matthew 24:13)

13 But he that shall aendure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

(New Testament | Mark 13:13)

13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Stated three times.

I know what the Bible states, and I believe what it states about who knows God and who doesn't know Him. I love people enough to lead them on the right path to heaven. That path is to love Christ by keeping the commandments:
(New Testament | John 14:15)

15 ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments.

JS got his knowledge of God from the God of the bible. Kind of circular isn't it.

No, he did not---the bible says nothing about God the Father had a father, and he had a father and so
on, doesn't say He had a wife, doesn't say Adam and Eve had to fall before they could have children, doesn't say a single word about having to be eternally sealed in marriage, nothing about pre-existence, nothing about us being His literal spirit children nor any of the other stuff he claims. Certainly never demanded plural marriages at point of death! He came up with this stuff on his own, then tried to twist scripture to say it's from the bible. Those who really know the bible, can't come up with such stuff.

What it means is, you can keep the commandments all you want, if you are not filled with the Holy Spirit, if you have anything that comes before your love of God---you will end up with nothing. It is a growing experiencer, it's called sanctification, another thing JS got wrong.
