I would like to go back to school in order to learn a career that will pay me better than what I am currently getting as an EMT. I am looking at being a scrub tech (surgical tech). No, I do not want to be a medic.

My problem is that in order to go to school and work my current job, I would have to work nights and that means for the three days that I am working, I would be getting no sleep at all because I would go directly from work to class and then back to work. School is five days a week. At 44 years old, I cannot do that. I need to be able to sleep and take care of my kids. Doing this would keep me away from home for three days straight as well.

The school isn't a regular college. It is a not-for-profit technical college where you take a test called the Tabe and then take the classes for the program that you want to be in. So there are no gen-ed classes.

I want to better myself, but there needs to be a way that I can do this without having to work and be away from my kids for three days straight.

I can only offer you heartfelt prayers that God will show you His way in this regard, that He will teach you. He will also provide for your schools needs and give you a balanced regimen for work-school-home. May it be so in Jesus' name.
Please come back and share the testimony. I know God will do it.
Shalom

Have you talked to them? Are there no options for online education for at least part of the course that doesn't require in the field? One would think a non profit would jump at the chance of lowering overhead.

One just has to look at the website and you can see there are no online classes. Also, when you do a search on online classes for surgical tech the very first result says there is no online classes for surgical tech. Here is an excerpt from that page:

Why Isn’t There Online Surgical Tech Training?
From sterilizing equipment to preparing patients for surgery, the duties of a surgical tech are incredibly hands-on. For this reason, online courses won’t prepare you to properly or safely perform the day-to-day responsibilities."

One option that you can do is take classes from regionally accredited universities like thomas edison state university,Charter Oak,Excelsior etc. You can take all of the classes online and the degrees are regionally accredited not nationally accredited like the university of phoenix, so they are worth something. You can test out of a bunch of classes too.

The program I am interested in is not online. There are no general education classes to take. It's the career you're interested in and that's all.

If you look a couple posts up, you'll see why the program is not online at all.

I was just giving you other options, I don't know exactly how you can do the program you want given the difficulties you have mentioned.

How many weeks is this class? I can not believe that it is more than a few weeks if you are going fulltime during the day. See if there are any forms of financial aid, even if it is a loan. See if you can go part-time at work (or check with other ambulance services) and just work two 12s on Saturday and Sunday (preferably dayshift). This would have you home in the evenings with your kids during the week...and include them in the goal to help daddy get through this program...thanking them for being patient with you during this time because your goal is to be more available to them after you get this certification.

If there is no financial aid, then work an extra shift a week (either at your job or as a contingent with another company or better yet, the hospital you want to eventually work for) and save up enough to make up for the difference of working part-time during the length of school before you start the program.

Also check with the hospital systems around you and see if they do "on the job" training. With your EMT license, you might stand a good chance. Also consider trying to get an ER job as a tech because sometimes you can be trained if you are already a valued employee.
