A couple and their teenage son have been arrested for the death.

From the police statement: "Ethan had been performing punishment ordered by Timothy which required Ethan to carry a heavy wooden log, weighing approximately two-thirds his body weight, while being monitored by Timothy’s 15-year-old son. Over the course of 1-1.5 hours, the 15-year-old hit, kicked, struck and poked Ethan numerous times. He repeatedly shoved Ethan to the ground and rolled the heavy log across Ethan’s chest. He stood on his body and head while Ethan was face-down in a puddle. He ultimately buried Ethan completely in snow."

The couple had reportedly been court-appointed to serve as guardians for the victim as well as two other siblings in 2017.

Damian Hauschultz reportedly told police that carrying the 45-pound log was Ethan’s punishment for “not knowing 13 Bible verses” well enough for Timothy Hauschultz’s satisfaction,

The crime was almost a year ago. I wonder why charges weren’t brought until now.

Hey, this isn't TV. You want everything wrapped up in 22 minutes? No, seriously, I don't know either. There was a report from CPS in July of last year, and a statement from the sheriff in October. Maybe just making sure they know who to charge with what. I dunno.

Sometimes with rapes and murders it takes a while for cops to deal with it because they have to make 100% sure that the suspect actually commited the crime in question. Maybe there wasn't enough evidence a year ago to convict them and they spent a year gathering evidencw? Who knows? I'm just glad that they're being tried right now because its just so horrible.

What hope is there for mankind?

As Jesus said --

"You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

8 “ ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’ ”

(Matthew ch 15)

"You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”
9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!"

(Mark ch 7)

People don't realize this is a normal and constant danger all the time, every century, everywhere, always. In fact, it's always going to happen in every city and at least some (or a lot!) in every church, and it's only by seeking God that we can even find Him, the way Jesus said (in Matthew ch 7:7-12).

While children that die such as this 7-year old will live forever in eternal bliss, in eternal life --

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. ..."

...“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

I know all young children that die will live forever in bliss with God. Something to remember as we see deaths of the innocent, from any and every cause...

But the foster parents and the teen involved desperately need to discover the actual Savior, the real, the actual real in the gospels, instead of what they have, before it's too late for them, because as Paul warned:

"God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” "

And we are only forgiven such serious sins only if we truly repent, which requires faith, not traditions. They have to abandon wrong traditions and rely on Christ instead to have any hope.

Huh.

I wonder which verses they wanted him to remember?

Perhaps it would not matter, but in previous instances of abuse in claiming-to-be 'Christian' families, it often would be some Old Testament selected verses (or passages) and often without enough context, as needed to maintain some false doctrine by misconstruing verses. Ok, that was another example, not necessarily this situation...but it's an example. It wouldn't matter if New Testament or Old ultimately, but the problem sometimes (often?) is a maintaining-doctrine attitude in which the scripture is treated like a resource to be used (broken apart and pieces extracted to be falsified) in service of an ideology.

Yea, because mental illness wouldn't exist if there was no religion.

Was that sarcasm? I couldn't tell. Because there are plenty of mentally ill people out there that aren't religious. Just like there are plenty of mentally ill people out there who think they're God. Quite sad really.

I am pretty sure that it's ok for me to say that religion makes certain people crazy.
More generally, ideologies -- beliefs in some ideas as the only way to a good life for people (instead of trusting in Love, or the God who is Love). Ideologies have driven all the biggest mass killings, on the large scales, like in Cambodia with the Khmer Rouge, or the brutal choices made under Mao in China, and on and on, and so many of the smaller scale atrocities. (Even genocides often relied on ideologies instead of only racism, ideology primarily and racism being only as an extra motivator after the main one.)

Of course it was sarcasm.

Mental illness would exist regardless of religion.
