I have been studying the life of Saul and I have read where his downfall was caused by pride. He was so worried about his reputation that he could not even let Jonathan-his son-be a better solider then he was.
He was also very insecure. He did not trust God but was too proud to ask God for help.
pride led to envy and envy to hate for David.
comments and opinions welcome

Sauls self pride was injured when he and David were returing from a battle with the Philistines, "the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music." One company sang "Saul has slain his thousands" while another company sang "and David his ten thousands". Jealousy entered the heart of Saul and he became angry because David was exulted above himself in a song from the women of Israel. Rather than subdue these envious feelings, he displayed the weakness of his character, and exclaimed "they have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands,."

Proverbs 16:5
Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

Jeremiah 13:15-16
Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the Lord hath spoken. Give glory to the Lord your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.

If we take pride in ourselves for following the ways of the Lord, then we are in big trouble. It's when we start taking pride in ourselves that we forget to give God the Glory. It is only by His power that we are able to do anything.

Moses forgot to give God the glory when he drew water from the rock, as a result he was not able to enter the promised land. That by the power of the Lord he had been leading the children of Israel to.

Jer_9:24 but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things," declares the LORD.
1 Cor_1:31 so that, just as it is written, "LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD."

When we boast or brag - which comes from pride - we should turn these to boasting and bragging about Jesus Christ. Doing this will remove the self-pride - the pride of this life - and keep our hearts and minds on the Lord. This will also bring into remembrance His Mercy, Grace, Faith, Hope and Love.

When feelings of pride come about anything in this life, we are to set it before the Lord. Doing this will purify it and change it into Praise, Glory and Thankfulness directed toward the Lord for all the good things, rather than it becoming something that puffs us up and causes us to take credit for the Good that manifests in and around us.

Amen!!!
