Do your words have the power to save or condemn you? How do you reconcile the gospel with the below verse?

"I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matt. 12:36-37)

I take it to mean that God will already know if you are saved or not, but you'll have to give an honest review of your life together. I don't see it as pleading at a trial trying to get by with a convincing argument like a lawyer would.

"I did this, I prayed, oh but then THIS happened..." kind of thing

Matthew 5:22 says we are in danger of hell if we even call our brother Raca...

What Jesus is getting at is what comes out of our mouth reveals the true condition of our heart. Matthew 15:18

They don't have to be reconciled -
the GOSPEL , JESUS WORDS, and being judged for every careless word ,
is all in perfect harmony.

The false gospels contradict Matthew 12:36-37, thus often causes confusion for those who read the Bible seeking God's Kingdom.

Have you ever called a brother a fool?

This is the best answer I have to give. I never really thought about OP's verse before.
Good answer also, it is.

Remember it does not rest by itself,
it does not stand alone -

every other Word of YHWH is likewise true, without conflict - without contradiction -

so every other Word of YHWH that describes a Redeemed man applies to the Redeemed man as well as Romans 10:9 does - all perfectly and truth.

Justification is a process the Christian goes through that involves faith (Romans 5:1) works (James 2:24) and words. Words justify when the Christian obeys by teaching the gospel in carrying out the great commission (Matthew 28:19-20), in praying (James 5:16), exhorting (Hebrews 10:25), speaking words of peace, love, edification and blessings (Luke 10:5; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; Romans 14:19; 1 Timothy 5:11; Matthew 5:44)

Context, context.

You can use this teaching against someone who has accused you of healing by the power of Beelzebub. He has actually called the Holy Spirit "Beelzebub".

This is the unforgivable sin. Sinning against the Holy Spirit. A result of tribalism. Casual dismissal of the deeds and words of a person who disagrees with your own doctrine. Compounded by ignorance of Who has been sinned against.

We can't use this teaching against someone who says God doesn't exist. Or can we?
