To remain together.

Cleave is the important word in the narrative. Lucifer was created out of the very substance of God (unlike the other angels) as his 'special angel, his 'loved one', but rebelled and so departed. The creation of Eve from the substance of Adam was a type of the creation of Lucifer and she was to stay with, cling to, Adam and not rebel. Sadly she was successfully deceived (by guess who) into challenging Adam's authority anyway thus creating an adversarial element in their marriage, an adversarial element that exists even today in most marriages.

The greatest challenge in marriage today is to remain together, unified, in all matters. As great a challenge is the husband retaining final authority in the greater matters and the wife submitting to that authority.

Because it's a typology given to us to understand as it pertains to the joining of Jesus and His body, the Church. We are one flesh with Him.

Eph 5:28-30 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.

The wife must treat the husbands authority, just as she would wish him to treat her authority.

It means the sharing of life, not just bodies and material possessions, but thoughts and dreams, joys and sufferings, hopes and fears, successes and failures. In short, it's being one soul as well as one body.

It is an outside picture of an inward thing.

I think the concept of two becoming one flesh is a microcosm of a spiritual nature.
We are to become "one with God in Christ"....so in a marriage, part of us must "die to ourselves" for the love and good of the partner.
It's a picture of becoming one with God in Christ.
And I suppose He watches and listens to see if we do this with our spouse. I also suppose if we can't manage to get that right, how can we achieve it in the spiritual?

God's plan...Such a big picture of what takes place inwardly, becoming ONE. Our soul...a desolate woman looking to be reconciled to her Husband...

"And the spirit and the Bride say Come! And all who can hear say Come."
