What is Beautiful?

Society for ages has drilled into our heads what is considered beautiful. And as the times have progressed the view has changed from what shapes and sizes are beautiful and which are not....just take a moment and think what society today has lead people to believe is beautiful or handsome and what you personally think is beautiful or handsome...and then also think about whether you stick to that...for example you'll hear someone say "Looks aren't important to me" then they turn around and either judge someone or put them down because of the way they look...is "beauty" really just skin deep? where does "beauty" come from?...

and I mean who REALLY wants to look like a supermodel anyway ?!?!(lol)

Hey HolyRageGal,

We are constantly pounded with what "beauty" is suppose to be and it is hard to not judge physical appearances of strangers. But, when I actually meet and spend time with people, I couldn't even tell you hardly what they look like physically anymore because of who they are to me on the inside. One thing I've noticed about some of my family and friends is they may loose weight and I will never notice unless I have something to compare to. I see people in a whole different way after meeting them and then those that may have seemed physically beautiful can become very unattractive or just simple a lot of times. Have you every got to know someone and just couldn't wait to be around them again because of something you couldn't put a finger on? That's what it feels like to me when I meet another excited Christian.

I guess that's why God wants us to fellowship with each other so that we can get to know the person on the inside, the part that really counts, huh?

HolyRageGal,

That's an excellent question. There has been such an over-emphasis on what is defined as "beauty" by our society specifically, that what is so subjective, has become objective, particularly for males, but also for females. Beauty has nothing to do with the outward appearance, that is only the very tip of the iceberg. Beauty, as defined by the Bible, is inner beauty. Back when Abraham was trying to trick the Egyptians into thinking his wife Sarah was just his sister, they noticed she was a woman of great beauty. Instantly in our mind's eye we picture Britney Spears, Cindy Crawford, or God-forbid, Christina Aguilera. That couldn't be further from the truth! In those days, beauty was the overall presence of the person, the way they conducted themselves, and even this, believe or not, came with age. How much of a reverse is in our culture! Sure there was some attention to the outward appearance of the person, however, it's no where near the kind of attention our society places on such a thing.

To see true beauty in a person today, look to their relationship with the Lord. See their maturity, compassion and love for others, and self-lessness. You can judge a person's beauty by their relationship with Jesus Christ. Other than that, it's all merely subjective.

In Christlike love,

Jared

I agree with alot of what you guys are saying, that a person would emit a certain radiance when their insides are good/pure/Godly etc. But having said that, I actually admittedly need the person whom im gonna marry to look reasonable. Hahaha i know it terrible but Ive noticed it as of late. Of course if when I meet the man God destined me to meet and totally fall in love with him, then it might not even matter. Who knows.

But in general, i think beauty is when a person manages to blend wisdom with mirth. Who I think is beautiful in that sense is Mother Theresa whom I seriously with all my heart is in total awe of because no way no how can i even begin to measure up to half of the amount of love she had for other people. She is an amazing instrument of God.

That's simple! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

that is soo true.  you can have a basic idea of what you want in a man or a woman, but God has a sense of humor.  the person that God has destined for you to be with will be so incredibly handsome/beautiful to you, even if he/she is not to anyone else.  it'll be the total opposite of what you expected.

and it's truly wonderful how someone can grow more handsome/beautiful as you get to know them more.  the more you like their personality, the more beautiful they become.

i myself have always been put off by really handsome/beautiful people, mostly because i've always assumed that their attitudes and personalities are bad.  i've come to discover that's not true, but i still impuslively steer clear of that crowd.

I like Christina Agulira (how do you spell her second name???) song "Beautiful" - the words are cool - the video is a bit bad though - actually I don't like the video but hey - it basically says that we are all beautiful and we should know we are. It don't matter what other's think, remember that God is smiling down on you and loves you anyway!

want to know beautiful? look in the mirror.

jeez, there are so many things we'd all like to change about ourselves, but God makes no mistakes. we're all made in His image, and when we finally stop trying to emmulate others, and start to accept, treasure, and take care of what we have - you'll just have this glow that people can't take their eyes off.

True beauty is of the heart. What is on the outside fades. True beauty is having a heart that follows Christ, that loves Him, and wants to do His will. I think that most of the time, with that first, everything else falls into place.
