What do you think "keeping alert" in prayer means in this verse?

Col 4:2
Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;

possibly contrasting it with a trance like state and explaining what state of mind to adopt.

Thank you for the replies and thoughts appreciate it.

I was thinking on a practical level as well what that might mean..like is it being alert to listening for God while praying for His direction in what to pray for and being conscious to try and be aware of Him. Is it being alert to see prayers answered watching for that. Is it being diligent in praying for things until something happens til you hear from God or until there is peace on something youre praying for. Is it simply not loosing concentration (I say simply but that can be difficult if something is not a pressing matter). Is it being passionate and praying with fervour as much as possible.
Being alert in prayer is an interesting concept how that actually plays out in real life praying I reckon.

I think the 'be alert in it' has more to do with the phrase about Thanksgiving. Like give thanks for what you have in prayer as much as when you pray (or more) for yourself or those who need something. God knows that satan is out to mame, kill and destroy and one of the best and easiest ways to get to us is through our mind combined with our sin nature.

What do you think "keeping alert" in prayer means in this verse?

Col 4:2
Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;
Here is the verse in it's context,

New King James Version:
2 Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; 3 meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, 4 that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Keeping alert seems to be akin with "continuing earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it (prayer), with an attitude of thanksgiving".

Paul then asks for prayer that God would open the door for him to speak about Christ to his captors. He adds we are to walk in wisdom toward those who are not believers, using our time wisely and being gracious to all we come in contact with.

I think remaining in prayer and being vigilant in it with thanksgiving is necessary to walking in wisdom toward those who are outside, so that we can answer with graciousness and not screaming and yelling at them because of their sins.

I think the "in it" goes to the "devote" rather than the "prayer."
In this context, it would seem to mean to be focused in your prayer toward thanksgiving.
