Hi all,

I find it odd that this argument is found in the baptist forum. It had always been my understanding that the general consensus, even the basic baptist creed, is that the Scriptures are the inspired work of God. That, as Paul claims, they are the handiwork of God's Holy Spirit.

So, If we believe that the Scriptures teach that the earth is flat based on this particular argument, then there are only two options available for us to believe.

1. God got it wrong.

2. The one arguing the flat earth position got it wrong.

I'm going with 2.

God bless you all.
In Christ, Ted

well apparently Baptist can now debate the sof in there section. that is why it's here, and why we get people who say oh God is wrong, nope couldn't be man we know man is much smart than God right? wait that is not right :) I jest.

Or....

3. The Bible is not a science book, its goal is not to teach or conform scientific discoveries. It is also not written in a historical vacuum. The times/cultures/beliefs of the people writing the bible do influence what is put in, including ancient cosmology. Being inspired by God, does not mean the writers had no freedom in what to put in the bible. And since the Bible was never intended to teach correct science towards its audience, God never taught/told authors the scientific knowledge that would later be learned in the future (i.e earth rotates around the sun, etc).

someone asked in another thread but is a good point so I will bring it up again.

If you do not believe all the Bible how do you know what is true and what is not?

Why is it you do not believe a great flood, but you can believe God as a man dying and being resurrected? Seems funny to me you believe God has power over the life and death but not the earth?

Your science also says people do not come back from the grave after being dead for 3 days. How do you reason that? can I take a shot? Maybe you don't but you would never say that because then everyone would say your not a Christian, for the record not saying you are or not, so you don't attacks the walls so to speak, and I truly believe you want to be in Heaven to, but people in the churches have said you can believe what every you want as long as you believe Jesus is God you will go to Heaven. Those people who say such things are lairs, and those that believe them are the blind following the blind as Jesus spoke they will both fall into a ditch.

Truth is demons believe Jesus is the son of God and even bow down to Him but they will never be saved. In fact everyone will kneel before God and confess He is God, but not everyone will be saved. See it takes more.

A person has to give them self over, they lay down their will and take up God's, or do the best they can. The life of a person saved is to better serve God, to have God at the center and nothing else. Those who chose science over the Bible seem to be what God said were divided between this world and Heaven, they are as unstable as the sea. No one could deny science is of this world, and we a person choose to believe science over the Word of God, does that not show division? If a person deny God's words they also deny Jesus who is the word. Do you understand that? I am not calling you any thing I am stating a Fact. What does Jesus is the Word mean to you? DO you not know it was through Jesus all the world came to be? by Him. Do you realize Jesus appeared before He came through Mary and took flesh?

I just don't see how you can say somethings are true and other are a lie, if it was written by men then its all a lie, No man has gone to Heaven and come back, they can not possibly know everything the Bible says, if it was written by men their would be errors in the accounts like the Gospels.

Some people want to pick and choose what they believe, but that is not God's way. People say show me and I will have faith, my son says this. But God says have Faith and I will show you.;)

Ever wonder why Jesus thanked The Father for Hiding His word from those who call themselves wise and revealed it to children? Tell me how would a child read the account of the Flood? " Unless you humble your self like these little children you will not enter the kingdom of Heaven" Jesus said. why would He say such a thing?

I got nothing but love for you friends, if I was guilty of not loving you I would have said Nothing.

The earliest known use of a compass for maritime navigation did not occur until early in the 12th century, and it was a single-point compass. The first four-point compass for maritime navigation was developed much later. Not rocket science here—just simple facts about maritime navigation.

P.S. Jesus lived in the first century. That would be eleven centuries before the 12th century, while the Church still believed that the earth was flat because that is what the Bible teaches.

Friend your record for facts has been very misleading.

Magnetic Compass

The magnetic compass is an old Chinese invention , probably first made in China during the Qin dynasty (221-206 B.C.). Chinese fortune tellers used lodestones (a mineral composed of an iron oxide which aligns itself in a north-south direction) to construct their fortune telling boards.
Eventually someone noticed that the lodestones were better at pointing out real directions, leading to the first compasses. They designed the compass on a square slab which had markings for the cardinal points and the constellations. The pointing needle was a lodestone spoon-shaped device, with a handle that would always point south.

History of the Compass

basically they don't know, Imagine that but the think, 200 bc

Who is misleading whom? The earliest known use of a compass for maritime navigation did not occur until early in the 12th century, and it was a single-point compass. The compass in the article that you quoted from was NOT used for maritime navigation.

A circle has only two dimensions; a sphere always has three. Therefore a circle is flat, not spherical. God created a dome and set it over the flat earth (picture in your mind a cake plate with a cover over it—or a covered plate of food delivered to a hotel room by room service).

Genesis 1:6. And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters."
7. So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so.
8. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
9. And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so.
10. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
11. Then God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it." And it was so.
12. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good.
13. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.
14. And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years,
15. and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth." And it was so.
16. God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.
17. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth,
18. to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
20. And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky." (NRSV)

Genesis 7:11. In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened.

Genesis 7:11 describes the opening of the windows of the heavens; that is, windows in the dome so that the water above the dome (see Genesis 1:6) could fall to the earth as heavy rain for forty days, largely contributing to the flood. Remember the cake plate with a cover over it. Plates are flat—not spherical—and can be covered with a dome like the dome that God created to cover the flat earth.

I believe the Bible, but I know that the earth is not flat. I believe the Bible, but I know that the Genesis flood did not occur. I believe the Bible, but I know that the earth is billions of years old. I believe the Bible because of what Jesus has done in and through my life. I know that when the Bible is responsibly taught, God uses that teaching to accomplish His purposes. I also know that when the Bible is irresponsibly taught, the Bible is reduced to a book full of nonsense that causes the hearers and the readers of it to reject the Bible, its message, and Jesus as their savior. This is why I advocate for an academically defensible interpretation of the Bible that honors and glorifies God.

Christians have called me every imaginable foul name, and have accused me of every imaginable sin against God—but that is the price we pay for faithfully serving Him who faithfully died for us.

"I believe the bible, except for the parts I don't believe".

Hi hammster,

Yes, that seems to be about what it boils down to. Of course, there are those who say that the bible isn't a science book, which it certainly isn't, but it's a book of 'truth'. I always chuckle at the conclusion that such an assertion draws, although no one who makes that assertion is willing to finish saying what that statement means.

Somehow, it is understood by some that when the Scriptures say that the flood waters covered the entire earth, the fact that the Scriptures are not claimed to be scientific, means what...?

God bless you.
In Christ, Ted

Its called understanding that the Bible is not one book, especially a book where everything in it is focused on historical accuracy.

The books of the Bible do not all share the same literary genre. And because of that, you can not assume everything that is written in all the books in the bible, is focused on being as historically accurate as possible.

I can, however, affirm a six day creation if it's affirmed elsewhere.

My dear readers,

Which of these four accounts in the Bible do you believe? Please read the accounts carefully and notice that the circumstances are different in all four accounts. The sexes of the people differ, their stations in life differ, and the places where the conversations took place differ.

Matt. 26:69. Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean."
70. But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are talking about."
71. When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and *said to those who were there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth."
72. And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man."
73. A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away."
74. Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed.

Mark 14:66. As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest *came,
67. and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and *said, "You also were with Jesus the Nazarene."
68. But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about." And he went out onto the porch.
69. The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, "This is one of them!"
70. But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean too."
71. But he began to curse and swear, "I do not know this man you are talking about!"
72. Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, "Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And he began to weep.

Luke 22:56. And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, "This man was with Him too."
57. But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."
58. A little later, another saw him and said, "You are one of them too!" But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"
59. After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, "Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too."
60. But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

John 18:17. Then the slave-girl who kept the door *said to Peter, "You are not also one of this man's disciples, are you?" He *said, "I am not."
18. Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
19. The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching.
20. Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret.
21. "Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said."
22. When He had said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus, saying, "Is that the way You answer the high priest?"
23. Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?"
24. So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25. Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, "You are not also one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."
26. One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, *said, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?"
27. Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed. (NASB, 1995 Update)

I don't know what translation you are using but NASB says nothing about a dome and it is the most literal.

NASB Gen 1
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was [a]formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was [c]moving over the [d]surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

6 Then God said, “Let there be [e]an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 God made the [f]expanse, and separated the waters which were below the [g]expanse from the waters which were above the [h]expanse; and it was so. 8 God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

9 Then God said, “Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of the waters He called seas; and God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the earth sprout [j]vegetation, [k]plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after [l]their kind [m]with seed in them”; and it was so. 12 The earth brought forth [n]vegetation, [o]plants yielding seed after [p]their kind, and trees bearing fruit [q]with seed in them, after [r]their kind; and God saw that it was good. 13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the [t]expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the [v]expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 God made the two [w]great lights, the greater [x]light [y]to govern the day, and the lesser [z]light [aa]to govern the night; He made the stars also. 17 God placed them in the [ab]expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and [ac]to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

20 Then God said, “Let the waters [ad]teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth [ae]in the open [af]expanse of the heavens.”

KJV
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

NLT

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.[a] 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

6 Then God said, “Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.” 7 And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. 8 God called the space “sky.”

And evening passed and morning came, marking the second day.

9 Then God said, “Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear.” And that is what happened. 10 God called the dry ground “land” and the waters “seas.” And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And that is what happened. 12 The land produced vegetation—all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.

13 And evening passed and morning came, marking the third day.

14 Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years. 15 Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth.” And that is what happened. 16 God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, 18 to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

19 And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day.

20 Then God said, “Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.”

There is no faith in science. You do not have faith in what God says, so how is you claim to have faith.

and you never answer my question how do you know what is true and what is not? How do you know Jesus is God, how do you know He is alive?

How do you explain that Jesus referred to Noah as an actual person, also Jesus referred to the flood as an actual event, saying it would be like at the ends days as it was in Noahs day. Are you calling Jesus a lair? Jesus referred to authorship of Gen as Moses and also that it was true? So how can you claim to follow Jesus if you don't trust what he says?

Jesus did refer to Noah and other parts of Genesis, that does not
Mean he thought the book was history. If I make reference to an audience about Moby Dick, the characters in it and events, to
Make a point I am trying to teach, the fact that I mentioned them does not
Mean I think the book happened. Just because I can talk about captain Ahab as if he were real does not make him so.

So the genealogy is fictitious?
