So, I just don't feel like even going to see Noah or Son of God. I have no interest, to be honest. It's Lent, so I'm not even seeing movies that I want to see right now, much less those I don't want to see (even if they have religious themes).

The only reason I saw The Passion of Christ was due to peer pressure. It was good for what it was, but I have no desire to ever see it again. I felt the exact same way about Schindler's List. Once was enough.

The old Technicolor movies were great though. I always enjoyed those. I'm not against religious themed movies- it just has to be a certain type of movie. The Ten Commandments, The Robe, Demetrius and the Gladiators, etc. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Russian film Ostrov.

Wow, I was looking forward to seeing this movie. Not so sure if I want to now! I knew it didn't follow the complete story in the Bible, but was unaware that it mocked our faith. It's sad that Hollywood would do such a thing given the recent success in Christian movie. Well at least I can look forward to the Movie," God's not dead" Thanks for the insight!!

I feel the same. I think the Passion of Christ was a masterpiece that was degraded into a slasher film/snuff film. I felt violated by Mel Gibson's vision of what HE thinks went down and like many horror movies (like the Hostel series) I feel like a victim of the director's twisted mind games. Outside of that 13 min. scene, I think the movie delivered but one viewing was enough.

Although I think the Noah movie will probably be laughable, I will watch it becuase I want to see how it was done. Son of God...eh, I can wait til it comes out on cable.

I am not sure if it will be laughable, but I still would really like to see Noah and Son of God.

Even if they're not Biblical, they still may be somewhat enjoyable motion pictures. But then again, I LOVE movies, and always find them entertaining. Just don't like comedies.

I'm more forgiving of a movie that does this, than say, a pastor.
Good point! A minister is held to keep the tabernacle holy, and keep the faith pure.
it really bothers me when Christians distort things
that are precious to our faith... when those who aren't believers do it, it
bothers me but not to the same degree...
where I've seen Noah interacting with other people are presented
negatively...it's like he doesn't even like them or something-- gee Noah,
lighten up on all the scowling lol!
Yes, that disturbed me in the trailers. I wondered if I would end up disliking the protagonist. But they cast someone known for that complexity of character.
now that Bible themes are a proven box office draw
1+1=2?
One predictable money-making method blended with another does not necessarily add up. (Or increase with synergy.) Time will tell.
For many, movies like this constitute their entire knowledge of the Bible.
I didn't used to believe that, but since have run into many people online who ask unusual questions -- showing they haven't yet read it for themselves.

I love love loved it so much that I saw it twice
Thanks for a balancing viewpoint.

When I first saw the promotions, I was thrilled that the movie would take on a serious tone on the Flood. After so many cute depictions of animals in a boat -- something kids can understand -- it was refreshing to consider they might show a widespread flood event with modern tech abilities.

I felt violated by Mel Gibson's vision of what HE thinks went down... I feel like a victim of the director's twisted mind games.
With this thread, I was curious how our approach fits in with what we want to see. There has been a lot of group mentality in Christendom lately, following favorite leaders, bickering over doctrine, people wanting to be right and latch on to others that are right.

Something that is part-truth, tenuous... it causes us to get less comfy, and take a more alert stance.

I like how you brought up being a victim -- I sometimes feel that way with movies and radio stations, getting more than I bargained for, because of the linear nature of time-based media.

Another thing - why oh why oh why oh, do filmmakers feel the need to portray Biblical characters as BRITISH? Where did THAT trend even come from, and who thought it would lend any more merit to the stories than portraying accurate characters (who should have been Middle Eastern!)? I mean, thank God that SOME recent Bible-based films have either sought out American actors or even those of the correct ethnicity (gasp!), but I am STILL seeing movies and TV shows coming out with these melodramatic British accents, and it's beyond laughable to me.

That's funny. I've been immersed in JoN lately, and frequently note the same thing. I suspect it derives from the King James - Shakespearean connection, but actually, I generally like it. Aesthetically, it seems to flow smoothly.

Sorry, but I am extreeemely skeptical of all these "I went to heaven/hell, now let me sell you my book/movie" tales.

The movie will probably awful. I'm also with you on being very skeptical.

Having said that....

The story behind "Heaven is for Real" seems legitimate to me. They've come and spoke in Nebraska, I also read the book. It's a good read, and I would lean on the side of it actually being a true story.

The main thing that gives the story credibility, is that it didn't happen all at once. This happened over several years in the kid's life. He would be doing normal kid's things, then just out of the blue he would say something about heaven or God or know things that he shouldn't know about. Then he would go back to whatever he was doing before, and it might be a month or two before it would happen again.

That to me, makes it a lot more believable than most of the stories you hear about. I don't think they are just out to make money, if that happened to my kid, I would want to tell people about it too.

As to the original topic....Noah is going to be awful. Bordering on really awful. Having said that, one of my roommates did make a good point. Even in the worst case scenario it does paint a bad picture of the Bible, but then you have an opportunity to tell people about the truth. It -still- even in its errors can create interest and questions. So something that is used for evil, God can still use to draw people towards Him. While I don't see myself ever supporting it by going to go see it, I can see how it would open up people to talking about the subject of Noah and what the Bible says.

I was teasing in the first place. It's not a movie I would waste my time on, but I thought if I went against the grain that maybe some sparks would fly. Oh well.

Any act of fiction or something "based on" something else will take liberties. That's the nature of film. Such was the nature of the "Bible" mini-series. That was so full of inaccuracies I can't even count. The idea of "Jesus the radical" presented there is a work of modern culture that strays from Biblical truth.

I'm sure 'Noah' will do the same thing. But I fully intend to see it as a discerning Christian who knows truth from fairy-tale. God gave us brains to use, why we don't use them is beyond me. Probably because it will take us out of our comfort zone a bit. I still remember when Ron Howard did the 'Angels and Demons' film (with Tom Hanks). My goodness what an uproar! How dare he! Nevermind the fact that when I went to see it, most of the audience was Christian. I don't recall anyone walking out, either.

Use best judgement. See it if you're interested. If it will harm your Christian worldview, don't. Perhaps 'Christian Hollywood' will do better...

As the biblical story is more focused on human trust and self-encouragement and human distrust and discouragement, almost nothing is mentioned about animal hygiene, the amount of food and fresh water needed to feed every animal on board, how much timber is needed to build the ark in modern age measurement terms. Seeing the film even with the most advanced computer visual effects on the ark's wooden structure resistance with the weight of everyone on board, the rough weather, and other unmenionables where a sewage treatment plant is needed to prevent damage to the wood - would be definitely be very interesting and to test one's general knowledge or brain teaser/mind exercise for fun:.
Of course, the real Noah's Ark and the facts surrounding Noah's life will all be revealed in full glory when Jesus returns and transforms us with new minds of Christ that will be capable of remembering every event in greater detail .;'*';.
