• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

"Reality" shows and TV altogether

The problem I have with reality shows is that most, if not all of them, are anything but real. They are staged and there are just so many of them. Reality tv just irks me for the most part. I have watched Mary Mary and The Braxtons, but even those are getting boring. I don't like to watch many things on television anymore.

Right now I have a headache and I am just writing what is on my mind. Right now, it is about television. I just don't like to watch many shows on tv as I just cannot get into watching them. For instance, many years ago, I would love to watch "How I Met Your Mother", "Big Bang Theory", and "Glee", but I cannot get into these shows no matter how good they may be.

I am not sure if it is just the OCD or if I am being weaned off of it. I would spend a lot of time with the tv on with me actually watching the shows. Nowadays I just leave the tv on while I am using the computer. I still watch family movies and most daytime tv shows and the news, but as it seems that is about it. I don't know if I should feel bad because I feel like I am missing out or because I have allowed the OCD to cause me to miss out. I wish that I didn't have this OCD to worry about or at least be concerned with.

We don't have a TV in our home....and when we go on vacation, we watch the news and maybe a documentary or something...but most of what is on TV, including most of the news, is so depressing...I find myself very thankful to come home to no TV...no wonder so many people are depressed, filling their brain on the garbage that is on the TV....

There is a few good things, Hetta, I'll agree...but the majority of what most people watch is not things that are going to help them to form righteous characters and get ready for Heaven.
Psalms 101:3
(3) I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes:

At best, the MAJORITY of TV watching is a waste of time...but the reality is, that MOST of it is harmful for the soul. Yes, there are exceptions...but we aren't talking about the exceptions....

Well it's my time to do with whatever I please, so if that means I watch tv, then that's what I do. I don't believe that my soul can be harmed by TV. If my soul were that insubstantial and weak, it would be long gone.

You are right...it is your time to do with whatever you choose to do...I guess we'll know, come Judgment Day, whether it hurt your soul or not....

Why would "we" know what happens to my soul? I think that I will be the one that knows.

If you think that the tv can destroy your soul, wow. What can listening to the radio do, or reading a book? And going to a movie? Yikes. Better stay in a padded cell from here on out.

You have nothing to back up this statement. Trying to tailor scriptures to watching tv just doesn't work.

Because God keeps a record book, and those who go to Heaven will be able to read that record book and see why others who are not there, are not there.

Yes, I do believe that TV can destroy a persons soul, and radio, too...and movies too. I live a pretty narrow lifestyle....no TV, never been to a movie....and don't listen to the normal radio...but I'm not in a "padded cell".... I live a very busy life, running two businesses....5 kids, 5 grandkids, 3 dogs and 7 acres of vegetation :)

You're probably just maturing and realizing you don't need to fill your mind with all the garbage that is on tv. What you watch on tv is just a matter of personal preferences. You have the right to like what you like or dislike what you dislike. You're not missing out on anything. And it's probably not an OCD thing.
