Hey guys! Im stuck on something. I've always enjoyed Norse mythology and the stories. I recently purchased a new firearm and im looking at some decals and i want the one that says "Valhalla awaits!" for those who dont know Valhalla is (according to norse mythology) where warriors who are killed in combat go to feast with odin for eternity. I AM a Christian and love the good Lord and thats why im asking. I dont want to appear that im not a Christian when i use my gun at the range and such. Again i do not believe in the norse mythology but enjoy its stories and characters. Thanks alot! God Bless- Mitch

The bigger question is not whether we think it is a SIN or not, but whether you think it is a SIN or not. Read Romans 14.

That said, it depends on the culture of where you are. In my place, i won't want to be caught handling a gun, more so putting Valhalla as a decal on it. I'd be called heathen or something, espceially since I'm going to the seminary. You, on the other hand, it depends on your personal faith and those around you. If it leads other astray from their faith or creates divisiveness, I suggest not doing it at all.

God Bless ye, o noble warrior.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I am absolutely positive that you aren't going to run into some random Norseman at the shooting range and he'll be all "Ah! Valhalla! My brother!" Ya know. It would be like me having "The Undying Land awaits!" on my car cause I like LOTR. It's a fable. Everyone knows that.

Go for it and have fun, UNLESS it's really bothering your conscience. In the end, you need to do what gives your soul peace.

Keep in mind what we call 'mythology' today is actually pagan religion. Just because it may not be a highly active religion does that make representing it a right thing? Do you feel comfortable representing yourself to others as a belief that it is an honor to die in battle so that you can ensure your entrance into a pagan paradise?
Would you represent a religion that is currently more active? Would you represent yourself by saying 'Jannah awaits'? (muslim heaven) And if not, why not? Mythology is just another word for 'old pagan religion'. Is that the message you want to send to people to represent you?

Haunted - I would like to respectfully ask: do you really, honestly, truly think that anyone is going to look at such a sticker on his gun and believe he wants to die in battle to get into a "pagan paradise"?

I do medieval swordfencing and there are quite a few people who do role-play as well and often enough use all kinds of mythologies. i don't see anything wrong with it. I used to be a big fan of "Stargate SG1" (they used a lot of old mythologies and religions for their stories) and had pictures and the signs from the Stargate on the folder I took to school with me and while I feel too grown up to still do that, I still don't see anything wrong with it. If it was an active religion, that might be a different story because that might be taken for real, but I can't really imagine people honestly thinking you believe in those mythologies.

Why would anyone who serves a Holy God and Jesus Christ want to put a pagan god or pagan symbol on anything? Would they want to put a symbol that relates to Jesus Christ?

In Revelation God was talking to Laodecia church who was lukewarm. God stated to them you either hot for God or you are cold against God. You cannot be lukewarm. If you are lukewarm, God will spew you out of His mouth. You would be like vomit to Him.

Nor can you serve two masters. You either hate the one or love the other. You cannot have both.

So who do you serve, the Norse gods or Jesus Christ?

Sure they may be great wonderful stories, but do they glorify God?

Moriah - how would it directly disaparage God? It's a fable. A story. A fun little decal. No different than if you had a Snow White sticker on something (fictional story based on old myths/legends/magic). There is nothing "lukewarm" towards God if someone enjoys a good book or story and maybe has a decal or tshirt saying so. You aren't "serving Norse gods" by having a comical Valhalla sticker on something you own. Are you "serving the gods of caffeine" if you have a Coke bumper sticker? Of course not. It means you enjoy Coke. The Valhalla sticker simply means he enjoys Norse tales.

Everyone needs to follow their own conscience, but we have to be REALLY careful that we don't slip into "works-based religion" or become so legalistic that we lose the whole concept of grace.

Pegasus is a Greek mythical creature. Is this image evil and sinful? Am I glorifying Greek gods by posting it?

The Norse people were not fiction. They were real people who worshipped real idols and demons.

The Brothers Grimm (who wrote Snow White) based their fairy tales on real people and real religions/myths/legends as well. Not sure what your point is.

Why don't you put an "I love Jesus" sticker on your gun? WHy isn't that preferable to "Valhalla awaits"?

Selah.

Where do you draw the line? Is he not allowed to express himself in ANY other fashion except to say "I love Jesus"? Can he say he likes Fruit Loops? LOLcats? Star Wars? Pacman? Is he allowed to LIKE anything else?

If he wants to take pains to identify himself with something, why not with his Saviour? Is there something wrong with doing so?

Selah.
