One can only discern the Lord's body by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and the Living Word of God dwelling in us. (Christ in us)

1 Corinthians 11:29
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

We who are truly in Christ commune with Him, and He with us. We partake of that spiritual wine,(which is His blood) and the spiritual bread (which is His flesh).

Here is a thread I wrote about the blood of Christ (new wine) that speaks. (new testament)

Hebrews 12:24; “And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better things than that of Abel.” Hebrews 9:17; “For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator lives.” So thus it was necessary that Jesus should go…

John 16:7; “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.”

But even after Jesus goes He still speaks… John 16:13; “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.” John 16:14; “He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.”

The Old testament was just a shadow of the New…

Hebrews 9:18; “Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.” And then in Matthew 26:28; “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

And we see the promise…
Matthew 26:29; “But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.” And we see the true vine that brings forth the blood of the fruit in John 15:1; “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.”

And what of that day when we shall drink it a new with Him? John 14:20; “At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.” Just as we cannot bring forth fruit unless we abide in Him (the vine.)

And when shall we come into His Kingdom to drink of this New wine? Luke 17:21; “Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you

But the new wine is not like the old, for it speaks of better things. And in order to receive the new wine, you must also be made a new vessel in Christ. Luke 5:38; “But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.”

But some still desire the old wine, because they cannot receive (hear) the new. Galatians 4:21; “Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law

But not all can receive it, neither can they hear it, because they are yet to be made a new vessel in Christ, and made able to receive His witness from heaven. John 3:27; “John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.” And again Jesus confirms in John 16:14; “He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you

So let us make our abode with Him, and He with us, and let us also sup with Him; partaking of that heavenly Bread of Life (which is His flesh). For it is written “That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” Revelation 3:20; “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

And so let us drink, and receive the wine a new in Him, not in the manner of the old written with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

For this is the New Covenant that speaks to our hearts and minds of better things…

Hebrews 8:10; “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people

And here is one I wrote about the bread of Life (hidden manna) which is the flesh (body of Christ) we eat, which is living Word of God dwelling in us (Christ in us).

In Revelation 2:17 we read; “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says unto the churches; To him that overcomes will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knows saving he that receives it."

So one might ask what is this hidden manna?

Jesus said in John 6:48-51; “ I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

This bread of life Jesus proclaimed to be is the very Word of Life come down from heaven…1 John 1:1
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; Jesus said in John 6:63; “It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life

But this hidden manna is not received outwardly, but is rather received inwardly by way of Christ revealing Himself to us, and in us, feeding us that Spiritual bread. Jesus said in John 4:32; “But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.” And Jesus also told his disciples in Mark 4:11; “And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:”

So not all could receive this hidden meat and understanding by reason of their carnal mind, for it is the Spirit of Christ that reveals these things to us. Paul was given this spiritual meat, but spoke little of it because few could receive it because they were still yet carnal. 1 Corinthians 3:1; “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.” That is also why the Lord said in Matthew 11:15; “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear

But this is not a knowledge we can achieve on our own hard work and study, but rather it is a received gift of knowledge that only comes from God when he removes the fleshy veil from our hearts and minds. Deuteronomy 29:4; “Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. This wisdom is not of this world, nor of men, but is revealed to us by the Holy Ghost. 1 Corinthians 2:13; “Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Ghost teaches; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

This mystery of the hidden Manna (Christ in us) is only received by the saints… Colossians 1:26; “Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints
Who also speak it 1 Corinthians 2:7; “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

I know what Catholics believe and I know what Lutherans believe and I know what Presbyterians believe.

If you're not any of these, what do you believe?

I'm Pentecostal. I believe the bread and wine (grape juice in the case of Pentecostals) is symbolic. However, I do believe that Christ is present by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is what other Pentecostals have said:

Pentecostal Evangel of July 12, 1919, "The Lord's Supper," p. 12:

Partakers of His Nature. Jesus took the unleavend bread----for they never used leavened bread at the Passover----and blessed and break it and said, "Take, eat, this is My body." As we come to the communion table, behind the symbol and the sign, we are to see our precious Savior and to appropriate and partake of Him. It is His desire to communicate Himself to us, and as we partake in faith, discerning Him whilst we feed, we receive life for our spirits, souls, and bodies.

God's Medicine. We were at a meeting at one time when a sister arose and told of a vision she had had three times repeated to her. She saw a communion table with the bread and the wine laid upon it, and the Lord appeared to her and said, "This is My medicine for My children." He told her that the reason that so many were weak and sickly was because they did not apprehend this provision for their bodies. Yes, at this feast we can partake of Christ, and He is alI we need for our bodies as well as for our spirits and our souls. . . .

William A. Cox, “The Spiritual Import of the Lord’s Supper.” The Weekly Evangel (May 4, 1918), p. 8:

It (the Lord’s Supper) is not an empty service, it does not mean simply being served with a little bread and wine on the first Sunday of the month— it is a means of fellowship with God, through Jesus, by the Spirit, and we have a right to come to it expecting God to meet us. Indeed we have a right to expect to draw so near to God that whatever our need may be at that moment, whether spiritual or physical, He will supply it. . . . when we eat of the divine body of the Lord Jesus, the living Bread which came down from heaven. . . He quickens the spiritual man; He revives the physical; He heals our diseases, and gives us strength to live by. By eating Jesus, the Bread of life, we have life in our physical bodies. . . . if we eat the flesh of Jesus, and drink His blood, we shall live by Him. So when you want to be healed, just take a great big meal of Jesus.

I know that when some first hear me say this they will recoil in disgust, but take a minute and think it through...

One of the many analogies that we find in Scripture pertaining to our salvation and the Kingdom of God is that of marriage. And all the aspects of marriage correspond almost perfectly to the Kingdom of God. One of those aspects of marriage is the offering up of each other and the partaking of each other in sexual intercourse. And the Eucharist fulfills those things which sex foreshadows. We offer back unto God a portion of what He has freely given to us, and we offer ourselves. In return He offers us Himself, and in that mutual act of offering ourselves to each other we partake of each other in a common meal. And just as sex is much more meaningful and rewarding when the two are investing time into each other day in and day out, so the Eucharist becomes more substantial when it is the culmination of a week of prayer, fasting, and reading the Scriptures.

So as marriage in many ways foreshadows the mystery of the Kingdom of God, one might say that the Eucharist is the conjugal love between Christ and the Church, giving us a foretaste of the reality of our "one flesh" with Christ that we will experience after Christ returns.
