(AoftheAP) A group of Italian Catholic theologians have sent a petition to the Vatican, imploring the Holy See to issue a two-year dispensation from the sin of fornication, to help Italy reverse the birthrate decline among Italian women. The petition, titled “More Copulation for More Population”, argues that the Vatican ought to issue this dispensation “on humanitarian grounds, else our beloved nation risks losing its rich heritage of the tradition of the handing down of Mama’s authentic home cooking to future generations, because there will be no future generations.”

Italy has one of the lowest fertility rates among European Union nations, at a paltry 1.4 babies per woman of child-bearing age.

Why the push to increase the birthrate anyway? I can see wanting to make sure that babies that are conceived are born, but why worry about increasing birthrates for the sake of growing populations? There's no shortage of people on this planet, and we're all worrying about lack of jobs, lack of resources, lack of services, etc..not to mention lack of food, water and air. If people chose to be single, or chose to have smaller families, what's wrong with that?
