NORFOLK, Va. — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney tapped Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his vice presidential running mate on Saturday, turning to the architect of a conservative and intensely controversial long-term budget plan to remake Medicare and cut trillions in federal spending.
Romney made his announcement to supporters via a phone app. "Mitt's Choice for VP is Paul Ryan," it said and implored backers to spread the word.
The ticket-mates arranged their first joint appearance later in the morning at a naval museum, the initial stop of a bus tour through four battleground states in as many days. The USS Wisconsin, berthed at the museum, was their bunting-draped backdrop.

Romney just help me make my decision not to vote for him.

The Obama campaign staff must be celebrating over Romney's stupid choice for running mate.

IMO Ryan is a great choice. He's just the person to explain the fundamental error of the Dems (that they make on the economy) and he's shown that he understands the economy and finances (unlike a certain someone.) As Cain said, it signals reform, restructure, and repeal. Love it that he's Catholic. And is for making our country great again.

Now there may be a chance for you younger folks to have Medicare when you get to be 65 (the Ryan plan was never going to touch Medicare for those 55 and older and had said that all can keep the present plan--if they want, but was for offering something better if that is the choice). Already Medicare was going bankrupt when Obama cut 500 billion from it. And Social Security? The retirement age has already risen (quietly) to 67. (Of course when Social Security first started not many folks lived past 65.)

I've heard that the independent vote are fiscal conservatives. They believe in balancing the budget just as they have to balance their own--and not spend-spend-spend.

Nope. Think this was a great choice. Young. Knows his facts. Fits in perfectly. Just what the country needs--so very, very badly.

Trust me, they don't want Paul Ryan. ^_^

Jim

Good Lord guys the election is like 80 days away and Mitt is STILL trying to get his base together.

He's already disavowed the Ryan budget.

Ryan's budget is the most terrifying thing the middle class has ever since.

Ryan is vulnerable as a Catholic for his Ayn Randism

He's not a good pick

Team Conservative seems to like him. That's a pretty clear indication that the moderates won't.

Maybe if they lose the election they'll finally stop taking advice from Grover Norquist and his ilk.

You are probably feeling pretty happy that you're not an American today, I'm sure.

But of course that's the whole key to Romney's pick. Romney has absolutely no idea what ordinary people think. He tells NASCAR friends, "I'm like you because I have some friends who are NASCAR owners." He tells auto workers he drives an American car and his wife drives, "I don't know, one of a few different Cadillacs." He tells the unemployed he likes to fire people.

I remember when George H.W. Bush seemed confused by grocery store scanners....but Romney would seem confused in Niemann Marcus.

And so, clueless as he is, he thinks that the middle-class would like Ryan, who's put a target on their backs....when in fact, most of them probably would like to see Ryan go out hunting with Dick Cheney.

I'm speechless....but it just goes to show that Romney is even more clueless than most of us originally thought.

Nah--Obama has put a target on the vulnerable, the poor working class and the middle class, as well as future generations. Over 500 billion from Medicare when Medicare is already going broke just to hurry that along. When it does, where will the safety-net be then? And fully 70% of ObamaTAX taxes are going to fall on the working poor and middle class. Of course this was after he said "not one thin dime". And I know my generation isn't going to be able to retire the 5Trillion in debt. The next? Don't think so. Their children? Their children's children?

So they are pushing a budget as his financial chops that the Bishops said was not in line with Catholic principles. And Ryan said that letter was not from all Bishops only some and that it was moral as far as Catholic theology was concerned. Then the USCCB corrected him and said no we do represent all Bishops and the budget does not meet moral standards. So Catholics who put conservative politics above faith will not care about that.

So when Pelosi disagrees and tries to teach the Bishops and claim she is right on Catholic theology and they are wrong...she is a bad Catholic.

When Ryan does it...he is a good Catholic and his budget is great.

When the Bishops tell Pelosi she is wrong they are partisan and do not care about the poor and suffering.

When they tell Ryan his budget does not meet moral criteria they are heroes. And that is what the Liberal Catholics who put politics above faith are saying.

All Catholic ends are contradicting each other. Except the Bishops.

There are, of course, issues of intrinsic evil that make Pelosi's position worse. But both still try to tell the Bishops what Catholic teaching is. One is praised the other vilified. And when the Bishops tell one that the position they espouse is wrong...they are partisan and have no right to say who is Catholic and when they tell the other...they are the benchmark for who is a Catholic.

With all due respect to the bishops, anyone with common sense and a pocket calculator could see all the problems with his budget (which will not, in fact, reduce the deficit but increase it to $16 trillion by 2021, and will not reduce the deficit any more than President Obama's budget in 2013).

Here's what Fact Check says about the Ryan allegations:

Which budget? There are two. The first one the Bishops said wasn't correct. (But since the ammended one allowed people to keep their present Medicare plan *plus would not touch Medicare for those 55 or older*, it seems, to me at least, that they weren't talking about the ammended one.)

And the block grants to the states for them to oversee the distribution since they are closer to the problem, seems to follow exactly the Catholic social principle of subsidiarity.

They deemed both his budgets lacking in the view of Catholic morality. The second one was passed at the end of March they said it was in error in April.

So none of them met the standards.
