In my opinion it depends on the intent. If you are smoking marijuana just to get high then I would say it's a sin. You are damaging your body by bringing the smoke into your lungs. However, if a cancer patient (or some one with a similar illness) is given *legal* permission to smoke weed, then I do not feel that is a sin. It is a form of medication for them that they are in great need of.

The Bible tells us not to harm our body. So smoking anything is a sin if you are doing it because of the addiction, or because you just want to try it. God doesn't want us to waste the body he spent so much precious time on.

Hope this helped,
Phoenix

The Bible tells us to treat our body like a temple. Smoking pot has the same effect as smoking 1 pack of cigarrets...so, God gave you a gift and you're destroying the gift God gave you. "1 Corinthians 6:19-20

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

We are to be in the world, but not of it. If we claim to be Christians we need to live for God in every aspect of our lives. Rule of thumb, if you either need to ask in something is ok, or you wouldn't want your parents or loved ones to know about it, (You feel like it's something to hide) then it is most likely sin. God calls Christians to be self-controlled, and not controlled by an outside influence.
1 Thessalonians 5:6 "So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled."

"Honor thy Mother and Father" This extends to our Government and it's laws. Mother and Father is also the govermentment who is protecting/leading us. If you smoke pot anywhere it's illegal, then you're sinning.

I have more thoughts and reasons why God loves us and wants the best for us, so in following His law, we will receive the best life possible!

This truly is a though subject though...I'm praying for you my brother!!

It is all about intentions. I'm cool with legal marijuana. Unless your like this guy I know who got marijuana to "stimulate his digestive system". Right... Anywho, if you smoke pot to get high, that is wrong. If the Holy Spirit says not smoke legal marijuana, don't. But if your conscience is clear from smoking legal marijuana, then cool.

And to the arguments that our bodies are a temple of the Lord, you are wrong. Our hearts are the temple. Because from our hearts comes our actions. So if our temple is clean, then our actions are clean. If I choose to drink beer or smoke legal marijuana is fine, if and only if my heart is pure.

Exactly. It says in spirit, and out of that comes what destroys your body. You see, Christians were destroying God's temple by saying "I'm a Christian" and still going out and doing sexually immoral stuff. Its because their heart was not pure. If your heart is pure, then the temple will not be tarnished, no matter what you do, because your heart tells your body what to do. So if your heart is pure, the body will do pure things. If your heart is pure, and you drink beer, then drinking beer is pure. Obviously, if you can't handle yourself, don't because we are supposed to be responsible for all our actions, but yeah.

Agreed! It says "in your body and in your spirit." The choices we make are based on what our hearts says. If our heart is pure, then our actions will be as well. And those actions include glorifying God with our earthly bodies in every way possible. Medical marijuana is one thing, but if it, or any other substance, has dominion over one's self and is wrecking your body, then you cannot use it to honor God to your fullest ability. But this is very true, that any other sin that doesn't glorify God is just as bad, and I regularly commit sins of various kinds. But It's striving to be the best we can be for God, and growing in the knowledge of Him every day. :)

It depends on if you are using it legally or not. God expects that we follow the law, so if you are buying and using marijuana illegally for anything other than medical reasons, you are sinning against God.

1Peter 2:13-17 (NIV)
13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. 16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

"Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; that which cometh out of the mouth defileth a man." (Mat. 15:11)

"Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of all the earth.…To you it will be for meat." … And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. (Genesis 1:29-31)

Generally doing drugs is not beneficial in any way. But I think you're
better off smoking some herb than drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes. There's a lot of Stigma surrounding marijuana, but believe me, once you've smoked it you wont know what all the fuss is about.
To answer the question whether it's a sin or not; the bible doesn't mention marijuana specifically, so as always there is a lot of contradiction and room for interpretation. There are quotes stating it isn't a sin (see above), but some others have posted scripture against it.

Im not gonna say whether or not its a sin per se, but i personally would never do it because i took my DARE lessons to heart back in fifth grade. :)
I know what it would do to me and so i choose not to. another reason is the effect of getting high. I have absolutely no interest in being out of control over my body and speech. im not sure if it has the same effect as getting drunk where you have no idea what's going on, but it has to be somewhat similar and i dont like to do things that mess with my mind.

I'm not a Christian, I'm still struggling with my beliefs. But I've already smoked weed. I'm not addicted to it and I've never ever smoked cigarettes. And even if a lot of my friends also smoke weed, I don't know real addicts. The thing with pot is that there's no physical addiction. The only way you can get addicted is if your will is weak. If you're confident and strong minded enough, I feel like you can do it safely. If you stay true to who you are and know what your boundaries are, then you'll always have control over it.
But if you don't feel comfortable doing it, then you shouldn't do it at all. And you shouldn't do it because all your friends do it.
I started smoking weed because I wanted to experience it and I wasn't even sure I would like it. I like it because I feel like somehow I understand things better. But I know that it's another state and I feel like smoking weed should be something that you only do occasionally. I think you should see life the straight way but there's nothing bad with having a little fun sometimes. I actually barely smoke.
For me, smoking cigarettes is a worse thing because it only damages your health and doesn't have any effect on your mind. It gets you addicted and damages your body more and more.
Some of you have pointed out the fact that it's okay to do marijuana if it's legal. But I honestly don't get the difference between legal and illegal marijuana. At the end of the day it's the same plant and has the same effects on you.
Now if the Bible says you mustn't smoke weed, then don't. But it probably doesn't say anything about it. In my opinion smoking weed isn't a sin but I admit it's not the best thing in the world on a moral level.

You know what I don't get? Is why people are so in love with smoke. Really? Smoke. When a house is on fire, what do you do? You don't stand there and think,"Man, this tatses so great! A nice mahagony undertone with a slight pine to spice it up!" No, you think,"Run! Run away!" Why? Because it is smoke, and everyone knows smoke is bad for you. Wether that smoke comes from a plant or a duck, smoke is smoke is smoke. CO2 is CO2 no matter how you smoke it(pun intendend). So why do I not smoke weed or cigars or pipes or cigarrettes? Because smoke is bad. I'm taking college-level A+P right now, and holy cow, you guys wouldn't believe the stuff marijuana or smoking or smoke in general does to you. A few minutes of oxygen starvation leaves brain damage. ny longer, and you can now participate in the Special Olympics. And I know smoking doesn't completely eliminate oxygen, but it severly detracts from the amount you get, still giving the same result(just longer times). So why smoke in the first place if it does you no good(other than cost you money you could spend on soemthing else and keeping you happy for an hour)?

That's hilarious! And you do make a point!
I'm not really supporting smoking. But people who have never experienced weed can't really understand what it's like (no offense!!). People have a lot of prejudices about weed. But is the real biblical problem with weed about the addiction or about the influence/effect it has on you/your body? Cause I mean some people eat very unhealthy food and our addicted to it.
Just asking.
And when it comes to smoking cigarettes or cigars and all that, I'm just totally against it. I've never smoke cigarettes and I will never do.

Yeah, I get that. I've never done weed, and probably never will. But I've seen a lot of my friends go through addictions to it. Sure, I've seen a couple not be addicted, but for the most part, it just hooks on you. They were(some still are) completely messed up. Its pretty sad.

Well, Biblically, it would be the addiction part. "Make no other gods before me"(second commandment in Exodus). So I personally having nothing with "medical marijuana"(if and only if it is actually for that purpose and not to make one "feel better", but to actually help). But once someone hits weed for an addiction, that is sinful and wrong.

Yeah it's really sad. That's the problem with not knowing and respecting your own boundaries. That's exactly why I can't support smoking though I sometimes smoke weed.

Ok so if I smoke weed like 5 times a year, I'm not addicted to it but I'm not doing this for a medical purpose. Does it make it a sin according to you?

Interesting point, however, when you feel what the smoke does to you it becomes a lot more appealing.

Addicts, of which I am not, don't see it as smoke as in from a fire or whatever, they see it as relief from stress ect.

In response to the inital question, I don't have to much of an issue with it. Most people seem to be saying it's a sin due to harming our bodies, but if you go down that route you can stop eating burgers, chips, sweets ect. as they all harm us too.

Weed calms the brain, chills you and and reliefs stress and pressure without giving you an outer body experience. As far as drugs go, that seems alright, compared to fast food which just gets you fat.

My view is Weed sucks up a lot of money and does have an effect when smoked often. But the occasional joint is fine.

Why are you smoking it? Just because its available? To further your own self-interest? I wouldn't necessarily say it is a sin, as long as it is in an area that it is legal. If you smoke it in the USA, its a sin. Netherlands, not a sin(depending on why you smoked it).

Can i point out most of the facts about weed being harmful are based on weed and tobacco being mixed? America wouldn't allow MEDICAL cannabis if it was harming people. It would be alot easier to keep it illegal.
Google cannabis cures and you will be surprised.

Weed is an amazing plant. An amazing medicine. And one of the plants God gave to us to use.
