I have been writing (stories, poetry and was working on a novel at one time) since I was 11, but every time I have the bulk of whatever I am working on, in my computer it crashes and I lose everything. I want to get back into writing, but now I have no inspiration, any advice?

Hey there :) It's awful when your computer crashes and you lose stuff that's on it! My advice would be either save on a flash drive as you go, or write it out by hand. A wise person - I have no idea who it was - once said "Writing is 10% inspiration, 90% perspiration." If you want to write, just write. Write about anything to begin with, just get back into it and don't give up!!

When you think about it, we form all sorts of mental blocks from negative experiences. It's not just the writer's block, but everything -- we could benefit from learning how to overcome our lack of confidence that we allow to slow us down.

Very true. Funny - I was reading a great article about this today.

Wordplay: Helping Writers Become Authors: Journaling and Conquering Monsters

I really recommend having a look around her website - she has some fantastic stuff on there, and always responds to comments!

I agree...I try to keep everything in several places. I have it on my laptop. In the old days i kept a copy on a 5 1/4 then 3 1/2" floppy. Now I keep them all on a flashdrive. AND once the story is complete, I keep a hard copy. since most of my short stories are not so short and recreating them nearly impossible, I try to have back-ups for everything.

As for inspiration, write about whatever gives you joy or fascinates you. Practice. Just sit down and start. Don't worry about if it's good. Don't 'edit' as you write (worry about that later).

Sounds like something is keeping you from attaining your true calling in life...? What about saving your work in multiple place, and not on your hard-drive? What about CD-RW, or thumb-drive?
