Did anyone notice that the US skipped Thanksgiving?

OK in all fairness, Thanksgiving is Thursday and schools will still be closed, turkeys will still be roasted but I am sad that the country at large transitioned to Christmas November 1st! Now Advent has already started and I helped decorate the church for the season more than a week ago, and I know that Thanksgiving is not a church holiday. But we are not running right through Thanksgiving because their is a renewed passion and awareness of Christ's birth, we're doing so because the economy is bad and retailers want as much time as possible to sell Christmas!! Thanksgiving is a perfectly good holiday, it encourages coming together with family and friends and saying "Thank you" to each other and I think in a lot of homes to God, this is a good thing, but other than at the grocery store there is no way to commercialize it. I've felt for years that the malls and stores were getting closer and closer to just ignoring Thanksgiving but this year they really did. Feel free to rebut, I'd love to be convinced that this isn't basically bad news but right now I'm just not feeling it!

Target cranked out the first Christmas stuff right after 4th of July... ridiculous. I think it doesn't help that Turkey day is so late in November either. I think it's the same next year but then it moves to a bit earlier...

I work retail and times are hard. There are folks at work (usually working 2 or 3 jobs) that are having trouble putting food on the table, much less buying winter clothes or Christmas gifts for their kids.

I know that my boss is trying his best to make sure that we all get to keep our jobs. If that means pushing Christmas merchandise as early as they let him.... I'll have to forgive him for that (although we didn't have our stuff set until right before Halloween).

Not to be a smarty, but the grocery stores certainly have pushed Thanksgiving the most. I think department stores selling dishwares with the Thanksgiving decor did too. Other than that, I have not noticed the stores pushing anything other than Christmas, and we all know how secular and commercial that is. :o

I am thinking of a real tree this year. They are not even selling them, yet! Not here, anyway. :(

I am allergic to pine. All through childhood we had an artificial tree and then when I was a freshman in college my mom got a pine tree. When I came home for Christmas break (somewhere arround the 7th of Dec) my mom already had the tree. I started to wheeze real bad and my allergies were running wild. I went in to the Asthma doc and told him what was causing the problems and he pulled out his prescription pad and wrote my mom a prescription to get rid of the pine tree as it was making me sick. Needless to say my mom was not the least bit happy with either me or my doc!

I'm not anti Christmas, in anyway, and there some (like us Orthodox) who can honestly say that the Christmas season has really begun. I'm not even against the stores for trying to increase their end of the year sales I know what a hard year this has been. I just wish that we didn't blow right by Thanksgiving in the process! For me it's the radio stations that are driving me crazy, seriously I woke up on Nov 1st to Christmas music, I really like Christmas music, I start to look forward to it as soon as the leaves start changing colors, but there is something to be said for anticipation!!!

What I like are those aluminum trees with the separate light that shines on them, but these are horribly expensive.

Buy one After Christmas when they're trying to get rid of them.
And save it for the next year.

My wife and I pray the Akathist "Glory to God for All Things" on Thanksgiving. We are under obedience to take a break from the fast in honor of this day which is set apart to be grateful towards all God gives us. Asceticism seemed at odds with that, so we asked and can eat in thanksgiving to God.

To me, it is the single best holiday on the American calendar. It isn't as commercialized as Xmas (lets face it, America celebrates Xmas - the commercial gift-buying holiday - not CHRISTmas or Nativity, which are incidental to / provide an excuse for the commercialism). And it is infinitely more theologically valuable than Easter / the Spring fertility festival. It is less demonic than Haloween and less narcissistic than the 4th of July.

Yup. Thanksgiving is the most Eucharistic of the holidays. I luvs it. May every day be thanksgiving.

We went to the mall today and parked outside Nordstrom. They have a sign by their doors that says something to the way of: We are not decking our halls until November 28th as we are celebrating one holiday at a time.

I love Thanksgiving as well, although I've figured out how to not have to deal with a ton of Christmas stuff... I get all my Christmas shopping done before Thanksgiving and all I have to get is food each week. I don't have to deal with the crowds and the 'shop, shop, shop'... I've got one more gift to find and I will probably look to Amazon.com for that...
