Buyer Beware of Microsoft Windows Vista

I have had my Windows Vista for more than a year now. I have learned that I can not add an extra computer thru a direct cable link, because Vista does not have that capability. I have the Hp pocket media which only works on a new HP. In other words, worthless! I have received hundreds of update patches for which has slowed my computer to a crawl. Vista requires all new software. A Vista program automatically rewrote some of my software so it will not work the why it was intended, nor work on another computer. It is not possible to partition the drive to install Linux, because of the new windows code. The software creates massive amounts of junk code; like Gigabytes of junk code. HTML editing is an editors worst nightmare because of the junk code. Many of the glitches are still not fixed. You have to relearn how to use the new software versions. Adds are built into the software. I have all kinds of external traffic from the different software I use. I have to agree to the adds, external traffic, and for them to collect info on me to use Vista. Vista is more expensive to maintain in different ways. And the list go's on and on. So what do you think?

The text below is from HP

Changing the Operating System to Windows XP
If you decide to change the operating system to Windows XP, here are some important considerations and helpful tips:
CAUTION: HP does not recommend changing the operating system from Windows Vista to Windows XP and does not support doing so. The outcome may leave your computer in an unknown state, functionality may be diminished, and you may need to acquire Windows XP compatible application software, drivers, or even hardware.

I have no idea what all that means, but I have heard lots of bad
things about Vista. Also there is no guarantee that my old
software will work with it...

I've been useing it for about a year now and I've never had a problem with it. However, I bought a new computer with Vistas on it and didn't try upgrading an older one, so that may be why. I also don't do much outside of Microsoft Works, Internet Explorer. Media Player and Children's games.

My computer's preformance has not declined (from what I can tell) nor has anything I have ever installed not worked properly. I'm not very tech savvy ( I didn't understand much of the post actually) so I think that keeps me out of trouble.

So, for a luddite like myself, Vista always works as intended.

Before I received any updates my computer was lightning fast. I have glitches with Microsoft Office. Does your computer have dual core processors? All of the things I want to do with mine is a problem. I think I will have to get a custom built computer.

Your network settings are probably just mixed up, Michaeletc. You can easily add other computers to your network in any Windows format. The problem is probably the HP software, as most HP installed software comes with a HP security suite, which complicates things. It needs to be set up properly.

The other problems you have are not something that you can't fix- it should be easy. I would recommend posting on a computer forum and I'm sure you'll have the issues fixed in no time.

Thank God that I buy my own motherboards, ram, hard drives, etc and build my own computers.

Thank God that I have Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, WinPro NT, and WinXp.

I can put any version I want on my hd.

My computer at home is a MSI mobo, AMD 960 Dual Core, 2.1 GHz processor, 160 GB SATA Seagate HD, 2 GB PC 3200 DDR2 ram, Sony 52/48/52 CDRW, HP LightScribe DVDRW, NVidia GForce 8800 512 MB video card, 19" widescreen Monitor, running WinXP SP2.

That I built myself.

Also I am linked to my sons XBox 360, and his laptop.

God Bless

Till all are one.

I build all my own stuff too, but I only last week networked a bunch of HP computers with Windows Vista for someone.

How do you find the AMD Dual Core?

I did not want to be monitored by Microsoft; that is why I wanted to be connected direct. The network does not work if you are off line. Also, you can only network Windows Vista only. I would give them a piece of my mind if I had one left. That's from working with Vista.

There's settings to stop that built into Vista.

I'm listening! Everything I have tried has been a can of worms. Can it be done without conflicts and passing out more money?

It would depend on the other computer you are trying to network to, and which OS it is using, and possibly what kind of hardware you are using etc. I know there's a link online explaining how to do it 'cos it's a tad complicated for differing systems....just can't remember where...try the old Google.

I wish I could help you more but networking is difficult to describe online.

Regarding security, it is complicated but: make sure you disable or uninstall Windows Messenger (not MSN messenger) if you have it on the other computer. It has an open port that allows hackers and monitoring. It was not installed in Vista. ;) Disable any Microsoft automatic updating as well (just update manually when you wish) and other features that connect to Microsoft (via the Redmond Company). Articles about that here and here.

I have already have tried a number of times to uninstall some of those programs. That is why I have had to F11 my computer about 60 times in the past year. It seems that there are hidden programs that attach themselves to some of your work, and when you try to get rid of them they also wipe out some of you stored info, or they cause other functions not to work. I have lost hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours trying to resolve things. I think the bottom line is that I will have to wipe the hard drives and install what ever. That's more time and money. Perhaps I should stop trying to work with Microsoft and just switch to Linux. Microsoft is such a large waste of time and money. In regards to any type of additional computer connection; you can only connect Windows Vista to Windows Vista. Shutting off any of the programs causes problems, sooner or later. Usually sooner than later. I was going to switch to my other computer. I tried to switch my Norton Antivirus to my older computer and found that the disc was rewritten for my Windows Vista and HP only. I guess that means that all of my other software and hardware is ruined also.

Michael - are you using a router? Do you have to use Norton (it is well known to suck the life out of just about anything that it's running on)?

I'm just heading out the door so will check back tonight... hopefully pgp_proctector or TerraSin or others sees this first.

Useing a router would make no difference. It's a software issue. You can connect any computer to another, but not Windows Vista. You can only connect Windows Vista to Windows Vista. All Anti viruses slow things down along with additional firewalls also.
