I'm looking for people who believe in Theistic Evolution, or the Gap theory or the Framework theory to answer 4 easy questions.

If you wouldn't mind helping me out I'd really appreciate it.

The questions are
How long are the days of in Genesis 1? Why?
How old is the earth and life? Why?
Did man and apes share a common ancestor? Why or Why not?
Were Adam and Eve real people? Why or why not?

If you don't want to post your views on the thread but are willing to pm me the answers I'd appreciate it.

Thank you.

Hello abidinginhim,

I believe in the information provided through Edgar Cayce. I'm afraid I'm not really up to date on all of the above different theories so I'm not sure if I qualify or not. For a more complete short explanation of our views wit regards to how we got here there is a section in "There is a River" entitled philosophy which goes into more detail. I might add that the book is a very interesting read.

1. We were all created a very long time ago. Because God wanted companionship.
2. Same as one above
3. The apes evolved naturally on the planet. Our spirits chose to experience life on various planets. We began indwelling the creatures on earth in order to experiece what they did. We became trapped inside these bodies. I suppose what you would call the leaders in the spirit world saw what was happening and took an interest in evolution in order to provide a means for our escape. They evolved the caveman into what is now man and limited our ability to indwell other creatures.

4. Adam was the same spirit who became the Christ. He sinned while on earth in that lifetime.

Yipes! This is a schoolwork assignment? You could spend years doing a PhD on each of these questions.

1. The Hebrew word yom can be used either to designate a 24 hour day or an era, just as we might speak of the "Day of the Steam Locomotive" without in any way implying that this was a 24 hour period. An "era" is not a uniform measure.

2. 4,000,000,000 and (if I recall rightly) about 1,000,000,000; based on scientific findings.

3. The strong bodily similarity suggests so; but I'm not aware that fossil or other "hard" evidence backs this up.

4. Frankly, the answer is unimportant. What we do know is that at some point humankind became able not just to tell good/right from evil/wrong; but to intentionally choose to do the latter.

The Book of Genesis is a parable rather than an historical record so the length of the days of genesis is not important IMO.

The Earth is around 4.5 BY old.

Yes, Man and Apes, particularly those known as Chimpanzees did share a common ancestor relatively recently (within the last 6-7 million years) as we share 96% of our DNA with chimps.

Were Adam and Eve Real people? As Adam means (red) Earth and Eve means 'Life.' I Suspect they are archetypes rather than actual people but who knows?

#1. The creation days are epochs of time. Example: God said to Adam,"In the day you eat of that fruit you will surly die." But yet Adam continued to live for hundreds of years until he died. #2. The oldest elements of earth are about 14 billion years old according to the speed of light. According to scripture before it was earth, it was a body of water without form, after God created the heavens. The Earth is younger than it's oldest elements. The animal life lived long before man was created. #3. Evolution is a falsehood because life is patterned. The limit of carbon dating is less than six thousand years. Animals that are able to cross breed are either sterile, or revert back to original form proving a pattern. The same is true in plant life. #4. Adam and Eve were real people and all life has a beginning. If Evolution was true, than it would be a fact and not a theory. There are many different life forms, but none ever leave their basic form. Theistic Evolution is a contradiction to the word of God. Evolution is "Random Convergence" or "Spontaneous Generation" for which is not demonstrated in science. All of the past proofs are either falsehoods or pure speculation of an artist.

That is a loaded assignment! But I'll do my best. Here is a bit of my backround.

How long are the days of in Genesis 1? Why?

Doesn't matter. Genesis was written for a primative people and worded in a way they could understand.

How old is the earth and life? Why?

The universe is 13 Billion years old. We know this from Spectroscopy.

The Earth itself is 4 billion years old. We know this from radio metric age dating.

Life began somewhere between 2 to 4 billion years ago when conditions allowed life to form.

The First Cause of all this, was HaShem.

Did man and apes share a common ancestor? Why

Yes. Evolution was G-d's self correcting algorithim.

Were Adam and Eve real people? Why or why not?

There is a Mitochondrial Eve and a Y-Chromosonal Adam, but they just represent a bottle neck and not the orginal pair. The people of Genesis are merely literary devices to fuel the imagination of the Bronze-Age mind since there was no way they could comprehend concepts such as Genetics, biochemistry and other advanced sciences.

Um... just a couple minor corrections in case you actually intend to use this information in your assignment:

1) Saying that elements of the earth are approx. 14 billion years old is a bit misleading. Current calculations put the age of the universe at about 13.7 billion years... so, technically, saying "elements" of the earth are that old is correct... but by the same token (and keeping in mind the law of conservation of matter), you might as well say that elements of human beings are 13.7 billion years old. Factually true, but ultimately misleading.

2) "Patterns" in life do not disprove evolution.

3) Carbon dating is considered accurate up to 60,000 years, not 6,000. Furthermore, Carbon dating is not the old radiometric dating method used. Potassium-Argon dating is used for samples that are more than 100,000 years old. Uranium-Lead dating is used for samples ranging from 1 million years old to over 4.5 billion years old.

4) Saying that Evolution is false just because it is a theory is rediculous. The be accurate, the Theory of Evolution is a theory that has come to be commonly-accepted as fact. Same thing with the Theory of Gravity. If you are going to say anything is untrue just because it is a theory, you might as well say gravity is untrue because it is a theory.

5) Evolution has nothing to do with "cross-breeding".

6) Evolution is not random or spontaneous. Mutations and variances are random, but it is important to recognize the difference between genetic mutation and variance, and the process of evolution.

I'm not going to comment on the points you made about scripture or biblical beliefs, as it is not my position to say if you are right or wrong there. I am only correcting your misrepresentations regarding scientific concepts.

The questions are
1) How long are the days of in Genesis 1? Why?
2) How old is the earth and life? Why?
3) Did man and apes share a common ancestor? Why or Why not?
4) Were Adam and Eve real people? Why or why not?

I numbered your questions for easier answering.

1) It somewhat depends. From a scientific perspective, genesis has to be considered from a metaphoric-standpoint (if any at all). So let's break it down.

Genesis 1:1-5 was supposedly the first "day". According to the story, the first day consisted of everything that would have happened from the moment of the big bang, up to the first time the earth completed one rotation about it's own axis. If we use the age of the universe (13.7 Billion years), and the age of the Earth (4.5 Billion years), we should be able to say that the first "day" in Genesis was roughly 9.2 Billion years long.

After that, it gets a bit tricky. Genesis tends to tell a story of how different parts of the Earth were created at different times. Kinda like making a cake by baking the dough, then making the icing, then making the candy decorations... and at seemingly random times throwing pieces of it together. Current scientific theories on the matter postulate that all of these different components developed simultaneously.

Unfortunately, the two don't really mix well. I suppose they might have lined up more appropriately if the author(s) of Genesis had a basic understanding of currently-known principles like plate tectonics... but here we are. ^_^

2) The Earth is roughly 4.54 Billion years based on uranium lead dating (or more specifically, lead-lead dating) of several meteorite samples such as the Canyon Diablo meteorite. As for the age of life, it somewhat depends on how you define "life". Current hypotheses in the field of abiogenesis put the start of life at some point between 4.4 and 2.7 Billion years ago... of course, that's not life as we know it, but rather when the first small molecules such as amino acids formed.

3) Technically, all life shares a common ancestor if you go back far enough. So, to be accurate, humans and apes just share a more recent common ancestor than, say, humans and rose bushes.

4) The concept of Adam and Eve, as two individuals that were created in a fully-evolved state from essentially nothing, and then proceeded to populate the human race.... is a bit rediculous. Even as a metaphor, the concept really doesn't work.

A little late but I will answer anyway :)

I'm looking for people who believe in Theistic Evolution, or the Gap theory or the Framework theory to answer 4 easy questions.

If you wouldn't mind helping me out I'd really appreciate it.

The questions are
How long are the days of in Genesis 1? Why?
If we take a literal view then they are less than 24 hours and are not really days at all but actually nights. e.g. the evening and the morning were the first day refers literally to the period of time between sundown and sunrise, It is assumed however that this refers to a literal 24 hour cycle which we call a day.

How old is the earth and life? Why?
No one really knows for sure. We have collected evidence that shows the earth to be in the neighborhood of 4.5 billion years old. I am not sure what the oldest evidence of life is that has been found but I am sure it is quite a bit younger than the earth.

Did man and apes share a common ancestor? Why or Why not?
It would seem that way.
Were Adam and Eve real people? Why or why not?
I don't think so. I think it is a mistake to even attempt to interpret the story of eden as a literal story. IMO if it were intended to be literal then to me that would pretty much prove that it is fiction. I believe instead that it is like many stories used to make a point rather than portray literal truth.
