You can not get a virus just by reading an email. The only way a virus can get access to your computer is if you activate it. This is usually done when you open an attachment in an email. If you ever get a questionable email and it has an attachment, delete it.

A virus is an application like Word or IE, and it requires you start it, before it can do anything. Just as you would click on the IE.exe to start Internet Explorer, you would have to click on a virus program to start it. There is no way a virus will start by itself when you read an email.

Not necessarily true. I absolutely NEVER open ANYTHING sent to me. I forward it to other email accounts, then open THEM at the public library. I figure if it destroys THEIR computer, that is set back up much more easily than my own.

HOWEVER---recently I received an email. The subject was blank, the body was blank---and as I stared at the screen for 5 seconds wondering if it was gonna display, suddenly my "DOWNLOAD" box popped. It wasn't an actual virus, but a script to go out to a website and DOWNLOAD the virus. On my download box, it had siezed both the "DOWNLOAD NOW" and "EXECUTE AFTER DOWNLOADING" functions. Which, if it had functioned, would likely have destroyed my computer.

FORTUNATELY, I was using a type of email service that does NOT connect to the internet, it just dials up their server and downloads the emails then disconnects. SO, when this virus tried to deploy, I was NOT online. It promptly said, "Site not found---try again later". Right. In a pig's eye. I deleted it.

I highly recommend, that when you are receiving emails, you keep one hand on the power switch (or "reset" button), and if a download box pops up, KILL THE COMPUTER IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!

While this one is clearly a hoax....don't take these virus hackers for granted.

They seem to be more creative than program developers. They are getting to the point where they can associate viruses to web pages. When this happens they can send you an email in HTML that is associated with a web page containing the virus. When you read these it brings the virus to you (how convenient).

Not trying to worry anyone, just trying to inform.

< Waving HI to old friend Ben Johnson and new friends as well >

Ben I LOVE your suggestion about forwarding your emails to another account ! I had never thought of that before.

Are you saying that if you move your email to say .. Yahoo.com address and open it there, then IF there is a virus OR worm that Yahoo.com would catch it first and it won't download on your pc???

A little thick headed tonight :)

ps.. 1st post here, I love this NEW board it's really nice !!

Hi, JoJo! Good to "see" you! :D

Opening the email in the library does carry the risk of infecting the computer. So many things are restricted on NT systems, it reduces the chances of damage. But, if the computer is damaged or destroyed ("destroyed" as in the hard-drive erased), it is very simple for their computer department to simply re-format it and install everything again. A little annoying for the staff, but only an hour or so effort. While on YOUR computer, assuming you have everything backed up!, takes far, far longer.

BTW I have "Guard-dog", with "McCaffee Virusscan". When I went to their site and got the new engine and current DAT profiles, and installed them, I could no longer connect to the internet. Did the winows "add/remove/programs", totally removed Guarddog, re-installed, everything worked. Of couse, I'm only protected to March of 2000...

Have no idea how to make it work...

Oh, and this board works SO MUCH BETTER than the new LBMB, doesn't it? I just got fed up with them.... :(
