Are there any foods that your spouse has an allergic reaction to?

Were you forced to adjust your own eating habits as a result of your spouses allergies?

My wife is allergic to pineapple, but it's her favourite fruit. Her skin gets itchy and her lips swell up, but it won't stop her from eating it!

My DH is the one who makes changes. I am allergic to fish/shellfish (iodine allergy). He has cut out so much from his diet as he loves fish. I try to encourage him and the girls to have it, but he doesn't like me having a microwave meal while everyone else eats the same thing (he says it's not fair to me).

I have a girlfriend who insists on eating tomatoes though they do the same thing to her as pineapples do to your wife. My only caution is that the more she is exposed to it, the more likely she is to develop a severe, life threatning allergy.

I have a very dangerous allergy to strawberries (completely swell up & stop breathing kind of reaction :sigh: ), and the only time hubby has eaten them in the 11.5 years we've been together is when he's been away on business, and even then only a couple of times. He is extremely respectful of my feelings, and also VERY protective of me (he freaks if I eat anything pink just in case!)

If dd has a yogurt or sweets that are strawberry flavoured, he will drag her off to wash her hands & face & brush her teeth, and won't let her near me. I have to say it does make me feel very safe & treasured!

Well, that's berry nice of your husband to be so protective of you.

I think pineapple has something to it that is irritating to the body - I'm not allergic, but when I eat pineapple, I got the itch too - only with fresh pineapple. It breaks down certain enzymes which is why you can use pineapple juice to tenderize meat, and why it causes whipped cream to split. (Kiwi does the same.)

I have no allergies, and my husband doesn't have food allergies (he does have hay fever and mild asthma) but he is intolerant of shellfish, so I stopped eating that, too. I only eat it in restaurants now, and I had it once at home when he was away for a couple of days.

We were afraid last year that he was allergic to cats. I can't live without my husband and I can't live without cats. So that was a difficult time. Turned out he isn't allergic to cats - thank goodness - but he had polyps in his sinuses, and now that they have been removed, his complaints are over. He was heartbroken, too, as he is crazy about our cats. So we're so happy that it wasn't a cat allergy.

Those enzymes are why you can't put fresh pineapple in Jello without getting a mess, but you can use canned pineapple without a problem. They enzymes break down the protein responsible for causing the Jello to set up solid.

Something you learn as a Lutheran where Jello salads are a form of art. :D

My husband is sensitive to cloves, his throat gets an itch and he makes the most horrible noises to relieve the itch. He gets a similar reaction to raw bananas. So when I make pumpkin pies or sweet potato pie, I either have to leave out the cloves or make two pies, one with (marked somehow) and one without. He's never had Chai tea, because it contains cloves for part of the flavour.

My husband is allergic to:

carrots
tomatoes
wheat (can eat, just not much)
dairy (can eat, just not much)

He also has skin issues, so he has excezma and is allergic to fur & newspaper print.

I have a suspicion I am allergic to dairy as well, since I get sinus headahes. Not proven, so I still eat it.

It makes life intersting. I have to think about more of what we eat.

Out of the two of us, DH has no problems with... anything, really, whereas I seem to be making up for that lack! I have chronic eczema, hayfever, and sinusitis... I also have a lot of topical allergies (walking through the veggie garden with shorts and brushing against the zucchini plant = really bad rashes on both my legs!).

He, however, doesn't like most seafood (excepting normal fish). I'm Asian, and as anyone who's Asian knows, seafood is a big part of our culture... something of a mark of prosperity, as seafood can be very expensive. So poor DH had to suffer through several celebratory occasions with my family at a Chinese restaurant before it came to light that he didn't like it, and then we introduced him to the joys of sweet and sour pork. :D

At home, I try not to have any seafood because I want to share meals with him. I'm marginally allergic to nuts, too (massage oil with nut oils caused me to break out in... I don't even know WHAT they were, but it was painful in the extreme), but it's not an immediate contact allergy so he can still have nutty foods. (I can't stop myself from eating my apple crumble anyway, nut topping or no!)

We both make little sacrifices, but on the whole it's not been a problem. He warns me when he sees something I might be allergic to... and he looks disapproving whenever I try to have some anyway... but he's a lovely man and doesn't say "I told you so" when I get a rash or itchy mouth. Usually. :D

We don't have to deal with much in the way of food allergies. I get hives from cinnamon flavored Tic Tacs, I have never tried the other flavors. My wife one time held up a box and asked me if I wanted a Tic Tac, I opened my mouth to tell her of my allergy and she immediately popped one in. I almost inhaled it. Then it came out a little faster than it went in.

Haven't seen a Tic Tac around here since.
