I have two banks, one back home that I got my first account through and have a car loan through, I also worked at this bank. There I have a savings account and a checking account, both are free. To avoid any fees on the savings account you have to keep a minimum of $100 in it, it doesn't matter in the checking, I also have overdraft protection through my savings account on my checking account.
My other bank is 5/3 and I like it too, I had to get this one since I moved into the town my college is in and started working. I needed some way to deposit pay checks and stuff like that. They have to option of free checking too, that's the account I have, I didn't get their savings account.
Most banks have a free checking and one that you can earn interest on, ones that draw interest have minimum balances you have to keep to avoid any fees. I think both banks have the small amount available until the check clears, it's just a safety thing for them.
