Okay, so there is this parish I go to for confession because it fits into my schedule well. The first time I had to ask for absolution. The second time, a different priest... says, "Hi" at the beginning.. and then at the end I have to ask for a penance and he forgets the words to the absolution and starts over. He didn't ask for an act of contrition either...

If this parish wasn't mentioned in the diocese website, I'd wonder if it was really Catholic. It's a bad thing to say I know... but is this just a different way of doing things for some priests and communities? Do they see confession as more of a conversation between priest and Catholic about what's wrong?

Mine does it in a conversational fashion but absolution & penance has never been a problem where I have had to ask for it.

Maybe he did not know you were finished. *shrug*

I'm pretty sure I left them an opening. The absolution thing, i brought up after the priest told me to tell anyone in line this was the last confession before Mass. Maybe his mind was distracted, or he was about to say it? I don't know.

The other, I don't know. He went into a bit of conversation and maybe he was concerned/confused by the time he got to absolution. Though, about nothing serious, mind you :)

The priest not going through it properly is what also makes me kind of nervous about making a first confession since I want my first confession to be at least perfict with no bugs.

Kusanagi, God give you Peace.

Quirky, short, long, scary, easy, stinky, first time or even "buggy"... every confession is "perfect."

God Bless,

I wouldn't think it disconcerting for a priest to greet you; I always feel somewhat odd when I get into the confessional and the priest does not say a word, not even to utter a prayer. However, I have had it happen to me that the priest does not ask me to say an act of contrition or give me penance. I once chuckled as the priest dismissed me but then called after me, "Oh, and for your penance, if you could..." before I exited the confessional. It was amusing.

If the priest has reason to believe that you have already said your act of contrition or have already done things that could serve as penance, he may omit it. Yesterday when I went to confession the priest did not ask me to say an act of contrition because I mentioned my new practice of saying once each time I catch myself doing something wrong, like gossipping slightly or being disrespectful or short with others. That does not mean that I should not have to say an act of contrition within the Sacrament, but I suppose it demonstrated to the priest that I was indeed contrite for the sins which I confessed.

It is unfortunate that often this Sacrament is not given as much care and respect as it deserves - at the cathedral here often the priests are late or they rush people through confessions more than they should. It is a pity, but all we can do is pray...

I would be a bit disapointed and discouraged about Confession if the priest was late or just rushed me through my first confession. Rushing a confession is not an option because I have a whole container freighter full of sins that I want to get off of me from Baptism till now.

One priest at my parish often greets you by saying "Welcome to the sacrament."
That would bring me some comfort when approaching confession for the very first time. :)

When priests rush people, it's usually because they were late getting started or have a long line of people waiting. For your first confession it would be best to set up a personal appointment with your priest. That way you can take your time and he will be able to ease any of the nervousness that you might have about it.

Maybe he was just forgetful. Happened to my daughter once. This priest was old and I guess kind of deaf. She didn't even get to confess her sins, and the priest absolved her. These things happen.

Heh, I'd love that. "Pray for me, Father, for I have sinned -"

"God the Father of mercies has reconciled the world to Himself through the death and resurrection of His Son, and has poured forth the Holy Spirit for the forgiveness of sins. May He grant you pardon and peace through the ministry of the Church. And I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit."

"Well, that was easy. Thanks, Padre."

 When I went to my general confession, at Easter Eve, I had phoned before and asked for a time for this - telling it was my general confession. I also chosed the priest that my daughters recommended! They said that our bouth were good, but that the "older" one was more easy, and this one, the younger, more "deep", if You get me right...:crossrc:

So I phoned and asked for a special time and I asked someone recommended...

He knew what was to say and all was done properly... And I felt like an idiot, of course... And when ready, I first didn´t understood, so I looked in my little book as for what to say now, so my priest smiled and said: It´s finished now!^_^
