  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

    Anti-rape device

Why do people always act like these are dichotemous things? A rapist could very well be motivated by the desire to have power over people in order that he may take what he likes from them. Power IS a distinctly material-external motivation, to have power over someone is to have control over...

    My Philosophical Basics

Oh, to the contrary. Anarchy is the case. The 'government' does not exist, the group of people who cloak their actions with that name do so because people believe in a 'government' which is precisely as imaginary as Zeus. 'The government' has nothing, desires nothing, does nothing, is...

    The Myth of Morality

Can you explain how you're defining "meaningless"? The statements are devoid of cognitive content. The words, as defined or used commonly, do not form a coherent and non-contradictory statement. For example, are metaphors meaningless? Not if they are understood metaphorically, but this is not...

    The Myth of Morality

It is literally meaningless, but presented as literally true. A morality which did not claim to make claims on your actions would not be 'moral' in any meaningful sense. The point is that the fantasy-umbrella that gets placed over these different motivations and ideas/associations is literally...

Should Video Game Creators be Held Accountable for Adult Themed Mods?

Should people be held accountable for the actions of other people who are out of their control? What kind of question is that? This is the kind of crazy that moralism promotes.

    The Myth of Morality

The following are a couple of excerpts from "The Myth of Morality" by Richard Joyce. They illustrate some of the primary problems with ethical and moral arguments, not merely individually but in total. It is my view, and that of the book's author, that moral statements are non-cognitive...

    Philosophy is . . . discuss

Anyone who doubts the validity of analytic reasoning of abstract concepts clearly does not understand the nature of reasoning and human action. A chair is an abstract concept. To rject philosophy because some philosophers or philosophies are disguises for other things is to put oneself at the...

Savage on autism: "A fraud, a racket. ... In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who

Conservatism has always been an anti-intellectual movement. It's the religion of Status Quo. Moving on, Savage himself is an idiot hippy who, like most conservatives, uses faux outrage to cover his lack of principle or knowledge. Just to be clear, I hate liberals, too. I hate government and...

    Why Good Philosophy is Unpopular

Because of the conversations I've had with people and the way I have observed they talk, deal with each other and deal with their kids. Hypocrisy, pettiness and ignorance are basically wielded as weapons to control opinion. What people teach their kids and the ideas they live by direct how...

    Why Good Philosophy is Unpopular

I believe that a lot of people were told their parents were good, by people who were the most powerful figures for the entirety of their youth. Propaganda expounded by someone in this position does not constitutes 'proof', any more than Pravda proves that people in the soviet union really were...

Everything You Love You Owe to Capitalism

By the way, the whole 'if you don't like it then leave' argument is absolutely non sequiter. Given that we are, in discussing law and propriety of certain actions, trying to determine what ought to be allowed to say, "You can always leave if you disagree" in no ways proves anything and bears no...

Would our intellectual traditions survive if the West was to no longer dominate?

Ugh, the Chinese could use an infusion of Aristotilean thought. And no, I'm not a western cultural imperialist (as my earlier post would indicate), and I do generally agree with you. But, to quote a Japanese scholar of the late 19th century, "European thought is successful because european...

    Why Good Philosophy is Unpopular

One of the thing that is going to make people angry when you talk to them about philosophy is that it is going to force them to confront their own behavior. Most people are bad parents and hardly more than children themselves. This point, upon which much of the destiny of mankind essentially...

To all of those who think...

You have to ask, do you really want the approval of the federal government, anyway? I say, keep marriage a voluntary social institution and keep the government out of it. Of course, I don't want to government in anything, but I can't see why anyone would feel the need for the approval of...

    The Return of Big Government

No one who actually wanted to reduce state power could get elected to any important office. This is an impotent strategy. People in the government have massive personal benefits and incentives to not only maintain but to expand its power, even if they are well-meaning (which is certainly not a...
