  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Writing process

I write on the computer, too; at this point, I've been doing it that way for so long that the whole ctrl-x/ctrl-v thing happens without my even realizing it. In other words, if civilization ever falls and the power plants go with it, I'm sunk. I'll worry about that when it happens. (Or maybe...

WARNING TO PARENTS: Why Eragon and Eldest are NOT family books

Interesting post, Blurrai! Having only read one of the Paolini books, I'm kind of talking out my nose a little bit here. But I think that anybody who's done any semi-extensive reading in fantasy at all will be able to see that - while not horribly written - the storyline is incredibly...

    Teenagers, diaries and privacy

Wow. Blurrai, you make me feel really, really old. And I'm only 31. Ouch. Although, to be fair, back in high school, I was the only person I knew who carried a notebook around with them. I don't think I would have wanted even anonymous online readers to see it, not because it was full of juicy...

    Compilation suggestions?

Hi, everyone - I'm Turtleopolis. I'm increasingly less new. This is probably going to seem like a really vague question, but I'm looking for a good CD compilation of praise music. What I'm looking for is something lively, but not full-on Christian rock; what I seem to be finding...

    A study in human nature

*long, low whistle* That is good material. turt.

    Writers Block

Hi there! (Turtleopolis <=== new here. ) I write quite a bit of fiction, and when I've found myself stuck at the beginning of a piece, it usually ends up being because I'm a) bogged down in "introduction" and b) trying to start in the wrong place. What I do then is try and figure...

    A. W. Tozer - recommendation?

By the way, Heron, thanks so much for pointing me to that site. Very, very useful! You Outreach folks came through for me once again. turt.

    A. W. Tozer - recommendation?

Thanks to both of you for responding. Indagroove, that was exactly the kind of recommendation I was looking for - I'll pick The Pursuit of God up forthwith. The guy wrote a lot. It's good to have somewhere to start. Have you read either of the other two writers I mentioned - Amy Carmichael...

    A. W. Tozer - recommendation?

I can't help but feel that there's a better subforum on this site for me to post this question in, but y'all were so helpful with my prayer question that . . . . I'm baa-ack. Cue the Poltergeist theme, etc. Anyway, I came across a mention of A. W. Tozer in a book I'm reading, and I was...

Boston Globe article: God and Country

Thanks for both of your responses. Voegelin, I agree that it's important to consider the source and provenance of any published piece of writing, and I can understand that if you disagree with the article's position, it would be frustrating to read. (Unless your second post meant that you did...

    Teenagers, diaries and privacy

Hi, Outhwaar - Thanks for your answer, and for being so honest. I understand what you mean about needing to take care of your children. Just out of curiosity, would you go out of your way to look for such a diary, or would you only read it if you stumbled across it? And would you do the...

    Question about prayer

Seen any giant blueberries yet? Seriously, thanks to all of you for your wonderful answers. You've all been really helpful. I think that my original understanding of prayer was rather shallow; oversimplified on the one hand, and kind of just plain wrong on the other. So thanks to all of you...

    Teenagers, diaries and privacy

Evil seems like such a strong word! But thanks for replying so thoughtfully to my post. :) What an amazing idea. I'm going to store that one up for when I am a parent. best, turt

Boston Globe article: God and Country

Hi, everybody: I'm Turtleopolis. I'm new here, and I ask a lot of silly questions. On Sunday, there was a really interesting article on the front page of the Boston Globe "Ideas" section. I'm too new to post links, but if you go to the Boston Globe website, there's a link to the "Ideas"...

    Teenagers, diaries and privacy

Hi, all, As you can see, I'm fairly new here. As you can also see, I'm not a parent. I work with and spend a great deal of time around teenagers, though, so I'm interested in hearing from the parental camp. So here's the question: would you read your teenaged daughter or son's diary? I'm...
