  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"If God Exists, Why Does He Allow Evil?"

I think we may be talking about two different things. I can see from your perspective that the act can be seen as either obedience, social conformity, or maybe even self-interest. To frame the discussion so we're talking on the same terms, we should probably look at Kohlberg's six stages of...

"If God Exists, Why Does He Allow Evil?"

I agree with you also. There are exceptions. But if those exceptions and decisions are based on love, then the act is moral. Yes, I agree that stealing can be wrong in most cases. But if one absolutely needs to take food to provide for one's own family or help someone desperately in need...

"If God Exists, Why Does He Allow Evil?"

You stated that helping and relying on one another is what helps us to survive. Isn't helping and relying on one another an aspect of love, the foundation of morals?

"If God Exists, Why Does He Allow Evil?"

Ok, understood. Therefore, what do you think is the construct behind these morals? I propose that it is love. Love is the "absolute moral."

"If God Exists, Why Does He Allow Evil?"

I believe your statement is hinting at the possibility of moral absolutes. As you stated, "I do not believe in moral absolutes, there are some things that basically everyone can agree on." This statement is self contradictory. The things that "basically everyone can agree on" is hinting at...

"If God Exists, Why Does He Allow Evil?"

The article by Winston observes love as a construct consisting of 3 different dimensions. Its simple to objectively identify love. Have you fallen in love before and wanted to do something for someone else? A part of love is an emotion like sadness or anger. I think it is easy to identify...

"If God Exists, Why Does He Allow Evil?"

There has to be a underlying construct to help humans determine what is moral and what is not moral. As someone stated previously, if a moral test was given to a random group of individuals, most would agree that stealing and murdering is wrong and that helping out someone in need is moral...

"If God Exists, Why Does He Allow Evil?"

How about we equate "absolute morality" to love and base decisions on love. And with love, I am talking about loving someone like a friend, brother, sister, or someone you really care about and making decisions in the best interest of the other individual. This love is very similar to the...

Reconciling a God who throws humans into hell, with God is Love?

How is being in hell a brief punishment? Jesus states in Matthew 25:4, "Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels." (NASB). Why does Jesus say "eternal fire" if the punishment is...

    God obviously dislikes video cameras.

Here is a video of, what I believe is, God performing a wonderful miracle. The mother brought her daughter, which was in a coma, from the hospital to church despite the doctors' orders. After having the whole church pray for the baby, the baby woke from the coma. youtu.be/wuv5TnWeoLY This...

    Genesis 1:3-5

We don't really know for sure. God stands outside time. Peter makes an interesting statement about the length of a day from God's perspective. He wrote it as a reply concerning those wondering about the coming of Jesus. Peter states, "But do not forget this one thing, dear friends...

Reconciling a God who throws humans into hell, with God is Love?

Before I start. I would like to make it known that according to Jesus, hell exists and that God will throw people into hell. In Matthew 13:49-50, Jesus states, “This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them...

    Do I have this right?

I believe this one is not quite right. But it could be because of my interpretation of the statement. (?) god has communicated with specific humans ever since - usually verbally - and many of those communications have been written into a 'holy book' which is known as 'god's word' as it is...

When it comes to economics Jesus and the bible seem super liberal?

I don’t think Jesus is commanding Christians to create a socialist economic society. However, exercising the teachings of Jesus does lead to some behaviors exemplified in a socialist economic society. I think the questions can be better answered through the eyes of what Jesus was trying to...

Would you ever start a business?

Having a business can, in fact, bring in quite a bit of money. However, owning a business entails quite a bit of risk. And despite what others may say, in the end you may still end up working for someone. Particularly in business, it takes money to make money. One needs to consider the...
