  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Live vs. Dead scripture

Ming (or anyone), could you give chapter and verse for the divorce thing?

Thank you! My goodness your honesty is refreshing, it's like a breath of fresh air after all this silliness! I'll bet that wasn't too hard, was it? Admitting that God and The World don't really agree shouldn't be too hard for a Christian; it seems to be central to Christ's message after all.

He denied her based on the exclusion inherent in his mission to "save the lost sheep of Israel"! He made an exception based on her faith, which led her to swallow her pride and call her people dogs begging for scraps from the chosen people's table. Somehow I'm missing the egalitarian message...

Lol, do you think anyone but you is buying your construction ("all I have to do is set up this strawman, claim he's calling God a liar, and I win!")? I can do that too. In fact, I can use all sorts of disingenuous, obfuscatory tactics. I choose not to, because they're inherently weak...

More to the point, I very much doubt they were an open group. They were probably as much a blood-caste (i.e., ethnic or racial group or sub-group if you will) as a religious persuasion, just like the Hebrews in general.

I don't see what's awkward about it...maybe if you explained the difficulty? So what's your point, that God is still a racist? :P It's pretty obvious that God does change, at least in His behavior. How could it not be so, when God interacts with humans, who obviously do change? I.e., in the...

What evidence is there to support that statement? Above I show a very explicit example of Christ treating someone very differently than he'd treat a member of his own group. Christ also has some pretty sharp things to say about some not-very-different groups (Pharisees).

    Live vs. Dead scripture

Paul contradicts Christ here (since Christ says not one bit of the law will be removed), and I think Christ takes precedence. Really, I sometimes wonder how Paul got into the NT at all.

He may not now, but He certainly did in the past. I don't need to find quotes about God choosing the Hebrews as His chosen people (complete with holy seed and all), or about how God hands down collective punishment against peoples as peoples, with none to be spared, do I? Surely that's racism...

There are many explicitly racist passages in the OT, but here is a striking NT example: Matthew 15:21-28: He ignored her because she was an alien, a Caananite (same basic racial group, but definitely not a Jew). Then, after she persisted he told her to take a hike because he was concerned only...

    Live vs. Dead scripture

"Dead" may have been a poor word choice, but clearly there are myriad OT strictures that are no longer obeyed; that's what I meant by dead. JC said not a jot or a tittle of the old law would be changed. Now, "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" may leave room for interpretation (even though...

I don't see that it needs any extra explanation - the "pedigreed Jews" are indeed shown as "less neighborly" than the "false Jew," but the point seems to be that "reciprocity + Jewishness= neighbor, Jewishness=1/2 of the equation but not enough." It's also worth mentioning that Jesus said many...

I have had this conversation before, but not with anti-racist Christians. In other words, not with people holding the belief in earnest; that's really not the way to test a position, in my experience. I am aware of no such scripture, which is a quite different position. IOW, I'm open to...

It all seems to hinge upon one's definition of neighbor, yes? A neighbor in OT was not simply "the fellow next door." It meant cotribalist/coreligionist (i.e., fellow-Hebrew; tribe and religion were inextricably linked for the Hebrews). Now, obviously, this changes the context of much of the...
