  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Why Wesley?

I consider myself a Wesleyan because I resonate both intellectually and emotionally with the Wesleyan understanding of grace as being God's active presence in the lives of us as human beings. Additionally, I agree that God's gift to us as human beings is prevenient grace, the gift to us as...

Why is the Methodist Church Falling?

"Why is the Methodist Church falling?" A better question might be "Why is mainline Protestantism falling-in America?"

What it does it mean to be Methodist?

I was raised in the United Methodist Church (except for a brief period early in my life when my family attended a Presbyterian church), but as I have been reflecting on my own spiritual beliefs and attitudes towards God, my realization has been that I had never questioned the Methodist way of...

Forgive us, Father, for we know not what we do...

Something I have been pondering...do we as human beings commit evil out of ignorance of God? Because if we really knew God, would we ever choose evil? When Jesus was on the cross, he asked God (our Father) to forgive us of our ignorance. What is the significance of this?

    God as... Creator

I think you hit upon an important aspect of humanity-we may be created in God's image, but that does not mean we are equal to God. We can't always tell the difference between good and evil, because if we could, why would we ever do evil? We are, as humans, limited by our perceptions. We know...

Did the Church hand down Scripture to us?

I agree with all of this.

    Perfection versus maturity

None of us can be perfect. Only God is perfect. But we can be mature, which is the acceptance of our human limitations, knowing that we can do much more through God than through our selves. :)

Dangers of Liberal Theology in the Church

I agree with much of what you say in theory, but what does this look like in practice? That is, how do we practice the unselfish nature of Christianity among selfish people (including ourselves)?

Dangers of Liberal Theology in the Church

Biblical fundamentalism is a rather recent American political movement, and has little to do with Jesus' actual teachings. Its popularity in America, I suspect, has more to do with it conforming to the personal prejudices of many Americans than anything else .

    God as... forgiver

Very interesting discussion! I firmly believe that forgiveness has to be genuine in one's heart, not just words out of your mouth. As human beings, of course, we always fall short of that. We can't help it; we're stubborn! But look at what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount... “You have...
