  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    what is it with people?

I think you should really see if your school offers counseling services. You're really not the only one that this is happening to in college. They've seen it all before. You don't have to have your faith disrespected and you don't have to get drugged up. Only a very small percentage of people...

    Christian Magic

I see what you mean better now. I was thinking of practicing santeros in North America, who may be becoming more and more conscious of the Catholicism/Santeria split due to modern culture (modern people tend to think of religion in exclusive categories). What you talked about definitely still...

    Christian Magic

I've honestly never heard of santeros parading their rituals as Catholic. Maybe it's that they see Santeria and Catholicism as an integrated whole, and that causes them not to make distinctions such as "this is Santeria" and "this is Catholicism". Same for Orthodox tarot readers. That's not...

US has lowest birth rate in 100 years due to recession

With marriage comes babies. The marriage rate fell last year as well. I think this is related to the other thread about how 20-somethings are "not growing up" (or pushing back social milestones). Who can afford to get married with all that entails?

    Christian Magic

Santeria is another religion entirely, and while some practitioners of Santeria consider themselves devout Catholics, Santeria places of worship are not considered "in communion" with the Catholic Church. And there have been Christian fraternal societies for centuries that have been usually for...

    Christian Magic

Neopaganism aside, there are many traditions, past and present, where some degree of magic is practiced within Christian circles. Arguably, Rosicrucianism - Rosicrucianism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Some Voodoo as well as New Orleans' old "Spiritual Churches" combined magical practice...

I don't know what to say to "you should only have as many kids as you can afford"

That's very true. My mom, one of six, was just fine with one, because she said she knows "how it is". And she was an Army brat, so they were never really wanting. It just goes to show how childhood experiences color our ideas about child spacing, probably just as much as experience of actual...

    Orthodox views on yoga

I just read that other thread in OBOB (the whole thing...yeah, I'm bored), and I have to say that I agreed with Shannon other like-minded people there. That's the point, though, Monica. Having faith in the victorious Cross means having the freedom to not look for demons under every rock...

purchasing icons, the good, the bad and the ugly

Another good place to buy icons is the St. Joseph School for Boys bookstore. They have a small family business that helps them to home-school their children.

    For the women here...

Well, there's been no decrees, but there are Christian women who do just that. In the western world. Who are from the western world. I don't, but I do admire their personal piety. About your question, if they're gonna pray there, sure, why not? Of course I would say this, because I'm already so...

Take a looky at this article...

Just reading the title, I thought that article was going to be about Orthodoxy losing its youth/not being able to keep converts. "Tradition" might be making a comeback (whatever that means; most people I know that are my age, outside of a certain clique, seem to be as uninterested in church as...

    The Illness of Religion..

I think we need to be very careful with "this is not a religion" stance in America, because it was made up by non-denominational Christians to slight traditional religious institutions ("it's not a religion, it's a relationship"). I like the word "religion"; I'm taking it back :)

    Question

St. Xenia of St. Petersburg literally prayed her husband's soul into heaven. Also, it's true that we pray for the souls of the dead during the oblation in the liturgy, have regular memorials, etc. I've been to one parish where a special place on the candle stands was reserved for prayers for the...

    For the women here...

Sounds comfy :) Mine is more like a wrap. You might have seen mostly black people who wrap their hair in long scarves (to imitate African styles) in a kind of a faux bun. Since I am black, I'm more used to wearing scarves this way.
