Any Other United Methodist Lay Speakers Here?

Hi Lynn, I'm a certified lay speaker in my church as well. I've been called upon to give a message at the nursing home and I've done a devotional or two during Lent. But I'm active with our youth group and always working with them. I really have enjoyed the trainings and was saddened that there...

    Christ's Birthday

Yes, interesting. I had never heard that story either. The Bible is silent on it, so does anyone know how it came to be that Dec 25th is Christmas? rookie

God..."The Biggest FAILURE" in the Bible? - Copeland Implies

Thanks for that because I would have taken it that Copeland was saying God is a failure. God gave man free will, we failed him. I don't know about the angels though. rookie

Please help me find an "easy to read" English bible

I know this is late getting here, but I use the NIV and the Life Application bibles. I like both, but I prefer the Life Application, and I like it's notes much better. rookie

    Cold and Darkness

I also think it's the reduced sunlight. I've learned that I "improve" a bit when I've been out in the sun a while, whether it's just sitting on the porch reading or running errands. But I kinda do like Whitehorse. When it's dark and cold, I like a cup of tea and curl up on the couch with a book...

I prefer my Bible version over others because: fill in the blank

I have NIV and a Life Application one. I like them both, but I prefer the Life Application, only because it just seems easier to read and understand, for me. rookie

    Should Christians tithe

I agree, God knows our hearts. We should be doing it as a "cheerful giver." We could give thousands, but I think that if we did it, feeling it was an obligation, then it's not the same. rookie

Amen!!! If "others" want to rant about their rights, they can, but they forget our "rights." rookie

    Should Christians tithe

After doing just a little research, I'm finding all kinds of sites saying that tithing is "unscriptural" based on the New Covenant. Wow. I personally don't see a problem with tithing. We can't just take our churches for granted. Someone has to pay the electric and water and so on. Just my...

    Should Christians tithe

If the 23% was a tax though, wouldn't that be a "tax" and not tithing? I thought it was in the NT about tithing, will go look it up. Don't remember anything about it saying how much. rookie

The Left Behind Series by Tim LaHaye

Yeah, some parts seemed slow to me, but I've loved all of them. I can't wait for the next one. But I was sad after reading the last one. And I'll have to check out the other books mentioned here. The Christ Clone Trilogy? Never heard of it, but will look for it. rookie

    Stephen King Book Club

The Stand is my favorite. When I first read it, I was in the military. I called home and mom said everyone was sick with the flu. I freaked out!! I read Dreamcatcher but liked the movie much better. But for some reason, when I started reading "From a Buick 8" I just couldn't get into it...
