  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thoughts on this article? Orthodox only

In the story, in 1990 Neophytos went to Iakovos who was talking with St John the Russian. The war prediction was not specific as to a time or the nature of the war.

Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America stands with Ukraine over/against Russian Orthodox Church

It's neat that you know Hebrew. One intrinsic problem is the SOI's self definition and categorizations. Whereas the US, EU, and Russia define themselves as states dedicated to all their ethnicities and not to any particular religion, the SOI defines itself as dedicated to one nationality, which...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

I can see that Aleph could be derived from "bull" or a herd of cattle, and that placed at the head of the alphabet, and having a derivative of Aluph (chief) it could have association with God. But I never found Aleph written by itself to mean God, and only find EL, Aleph and Lamad. Likewise, I...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

Thanks for trying, but I think that this example helps disprove the thesis, since Mishereth means bowl, not "From the waters comes destruction which tames the peoples owners". Any connection between the two looks too weak for me to believe.

Can one logically or scientifically prove the existence of the soul?

Thank you for sharing. I understand that this can count as evidence, however I am looking for scientific or logical arguments other than the Bible's authority by itself, please. It's not that religious arguments are necessarily wrong. It would be helpful for me to have additional arguments.

Can one logically or scientifically prove the existence of the soul?

I sense that I am distinct in reality from my body and physical brain because I can observe them in the first person. This experience, my conscious subjective state, appears radically different from simply a lump of brain detecting the world or itself in a computerlike way. Viewing the world as...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

What "Rabbi" was teaching his students this way? I have asked numerous users of Hebrew about this theory and they say that it's garbage. Unlike Chinese writing, Hebrew is a phonetic language in writing, whereby each word's letters' pictures do not add up to the meaning of the whole word. One...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

I am hooked on Benner's idea about an inner meaning in some words that is reflected in the letters' combination, at least when it comes to the most special words like YHWH. But when I look at the word EL, It's hard for me to see a clear mystical inner meaning from the pictures. A goad pokes into...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

The book on page 109 suggests that the Egyptian Hierative (IIRC, this means cursive) for lioness, which looks like a horizontal 6, may have been the basis for the Semitic L. I can see a bit of a resemblance between a horizontal 6 and the Sinaitic lamads that have a circle at the end. To answer...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

Damian, I don't need someone with a PhD to show whether Lamad is related to a staff, only evidence other than many people posting the same allegation. Thank you for your chart and the reference, Damian. However the author doesn't look very reliable. Notice how he calls Egyptian "Kemetic", which...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

Damian, Wikipedia and Hebrew 4 Christians don't explain how they got to the conclusion that Lamad referred to a shepherd's staff, which is what I am looking for. I am not closed-minded to your theory, I am just looking for explanation or proof of this. Hebrew letters are named after that which...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

Damian, Every letter of the Hebrew alphabet is named after the picture drawn. For example, the first letter is called "Aleph", a Hebrew word meaning "herd", oxen, cattle, and its picture is a bull's head. The letter is called Lamad, a Hebrew word meaning "teach", from which is derived the...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

Thanks for writing in about this. My problem with this quote is that the writer doesn't provide evidence to back up his claim that "The is a picture of a shepherd staff and also represents the authority of the shepherd. " Remember, a shepherd staff wood have the handle at the top like an r ...

Do the letters of God's Hebrew name "El" make their own meaning?

Good explanation. Ha El and Ha Adam are changed to God and Adam and treated as both proper nouns. In Josephus Flavius, God is called The Deity sometimes in Greek.
