  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Texas will require public school classrooms to display Ten Commandments under bill nearing passage

I love how the legislature was so heck-bent on passing this that they were happy to break the 4th commandment to do so. As we all know, that is not a mild offense - God has ordered death as the punishment for violating that one (see Numbers 15:35).

    Queer theology recommendations?

For pride month I thought I might dip my toes into queer theology for the first time. Does anyone have any recommendations for something that is written for lay-people?

We are deporting legal Afghan Christians refugees who fled torture for their faith

The administration has emailed Afghans who entered the US legally (with extensive vetting) with protected status, and told them they need to self deport or face law enforcement actions. This includes Afghans who aided US soldiers and will be killed if they return home, as well as Christians who...

Trump admin. concedes Maryland man from El Salvador was mistakenly deported/sent to mega prison - shrugs 'nothing can be done' [ETA: oh but it can!]

I see you are choosing to ignore how it violated a court order to send him to El Salvador, and that a judge ordered the planes to turn around while they were in the air. The course of action I outlined could be used against anyone. Even a citizen. Either we are a nation of laws that are...

Trump admin. concedes Maryland man from El Salvador was mistakenly deported/sent to mega prison - shrugs 'nothing can be done' [ETA: oh but it can!]

So you are okay giving this and all future administrations this power, because you trust that such power will never be abused. That is your prerogative. I do not trust any government with that power. It is the power of a dictatorship.

Trump admin. concedes Maryland man from El Salvador was mistakenly deported/sent to mega prison - shrugs 'nothing can be done' [ETA: oh but it can!]

The administration's plan here is actually quite clever. If they get away with doing this, then they have established they can do the following: * have ICE detain a person * get them on a plane leaving the country before any judges have a chance to rule on the legality * if/when the courts say...

North Idaho: an unlikely fight against GOP extremism; renegade Republicans are seeking to root it out in crucial primary today

I grew up in Eastern Washington and had a friend living in Coeur d'Alene in the mid-1980s. I recall receiving a long letter she wrote because she was trapped in her house - the white supremacists were marching in town again... It apparently was not an unusual event. That would be one of the...

    Did Joshua commit genocide?

You make a good point. I agree that following Jesus’ teaching and example is paramount, and that it is not at all a simple formula that looks the same for all people. I am also aware of at least some of the complexity and variety of biblical interpretation in the second-temple period that...

    Did Joshua commit genocide?

I have not read any of the countless volumes of dig reports from various sites, nor have I read any of the peer-reviewed literature. So no, I don't. I suspect I wouldn't even know how to properly read and interpret archaeological evidence. For example, to me a broken piece of pottery is...

Tufts international student taken into us custody--visa terminated

Edit: the post below is muddled because I was thinking of the fellow sent to El Salvador while this thread is about the Tufts student. Oops! Please ignore the below text! Had we not skipped due process, I suspect that he never would have been deported in the first place. But the current...

    Did Joshua commit genocide?

Here I am just going to lift stuff from The Bible Tells Me So. He does not present the evidence itself, but gives the conclusions that archeologists seems to have some consensus about. Before this he makes it clear that while archeologist are trained and experienced scholars, they of course...

    Did Joshua commit genocide?

Agreed. And I used to think it was just modern sentiments until I recently read The Life of Moses by Gregory of Nyssa, who apparently had the same response to the killing of the Egyptian firstborn. I believe I mentioned this in some other thread already, but he asked the same questions I do...

    Did Joshua commit genocide?

Sorry for the late reply - the last few weeks have been nutty for our family! I am not an archeologist, but if my understanding is correct then it seems like there is a large amount of archeological evidence that goes against the biblical account. So yes, in this case I put more weight on the...

    Did Joshua commit genocide?

Regardless of whether it ‘counts’ as genocide, God ordering the mass slaughter of perhaps hundreds of thousands of children is pretty hard to handle. I am not familiar with the fellow you are refuting, and I agree that he overstates things and seems sloppy, but I suspect I mostly agree with his...

US revokes legal status for 500,000 immigrants

To be admitted under this program the people had to pass background checks and have financial sponsors. They also cannot have ever entered the country illegally. These individuals have been vetted. Trump doesn’t want them here. Instead he has invited white South Africans to come. I wonder why?
