  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Out carolling

I'm glad you had a great time! I enjoy carolling with our band and songsters - always have done, and it's a great way of meeting the people, spreading the Gospel and raising funds for our work with the community. It will be a very sad day if Army bands ever ceased to exist (as is the expressed...

    Doctrine number 11

Ah, but this analogy (one of many) is where the misunderstanding is! There is no choice of 'touch and burned; don't touch and be safe'. The fact is we are too close to the fire already andn we are beginning to singe at the edges! The choice that God gives is to stay near the fire (ie, as we...

    Doctrine number 11

Wealth and Poverty are relative. If you earn £1000 a week and the guy down the street earns £100, you are rich, he is poor. However, the guy down the street who earns £100 is far more wealthy than a homeless man with no coat, no bed and no food. To the homeless person, the £100 a week guy...

    Doctrine number 11

I am not sure I subscribe to this idea that we punish ourselves simply because it seems to be a device that we use to make God seem more acceptable; after all, we can't have a God with feelings other than love now can we? Why can't God punish? Why can't God be wrathful? Why can't God - who...

    Doctrine number 11

Well, the love of money is the root of all evil. But toi be quite honest I think your answer verges oin the political rather than the theological. While it may be true that those who worship the mighty dollar - leaders of corporations, etc - may be the ricjh men who find it hard to enter the...

    Doctrine number 11

But there are so many ways in which we are fighting injustice and doing positive things: We are campaigning against human trafficking, freer gambling laws, freer licensing laws. We were very much a part of the make poverty history efforts. We work intenseively with AIDS, the greatest killer on...

    Doctrine number 11

'The wicked', according to the 1925 handbook of doctrine, are simply 'those who die in their sins'. The definition of sin, according to the modern handbook 'Salvation Story' is 'failure to believe and trust in God, and so to desire to be independent of him.' Therefore the people who go to...

    Chick Yuill's Resignation Letter

I think I just need to correct a misconception here: The Salvation Army does not (as yet) employ its officers. They do not get a salary; they do not get remuneration for hours worked or for work completed. In other words there is no productivity, no overtime, no bonuses, no 'reward'. There...

    Chick Yuill's Resignation Letter

I’ve replied in this way because I don’t know how to make selective quotes: Andy: It is becoming increasingly clear that there has been wrong on both sides in this situation. Me: Really? What evidence do you have for this? Andy: But the General both as TC and as General, could, and...

    Chick Yuill's Resignation Letter

Combat gear? T-Shirts? Yes, but not all Salvationists are teenagers! You have to have a uniform that suits all ages, sexes and body types. 'Student-wear' is not suitable for most people over 30. Apart from the cringe factor of older people trying to dress young, it would simply look stupid.

    Chick Yuill's Resignation Letter

Thanks Andy for your recent posts. I am heartily sick and tired of people suggesting the uniform is a restriction and an economic burden. The truth is that you will put your money into whatever you value most. I wonder ifg the people who moan about the £150 they might fork out on a uniform...

    Somewhat off topic I feel.

    Chick Yuill's Resignation Letter

This all assumes that CY is in the right, does it not? There may be another side to consider. And there are those who have considered the possibility and are not convinced that CY has been badly treated and may have resigned needlessly.

    Chick Yuill's Resignation Letter

He may have said it - in fact it was a quote from Roland Hill - but it wasn't born up in the song book that he produced. Not all the songs were put to secular tunes - some were, indeed, but that was common practice in the churches already. It was nothing new for the Army to start using them. We...

    Chick Yuill's Resignation Letter

I am not sure it was either relevant or contemporary. Just what aspects of the Army could be described as such? Don't say the uniform because when Mrs Booth introduced the bonnet the female cadets all complained it was old fashioned! If Army history tells you anything it's that manty, many...
