  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Convertitis Revisited

I've presented this argument to various priests several times myself, and every single one of them agreed. The problem is that those canons don't really provide guidance for our situation. The Orthodox who came to America for evangelical reasons did translate things into English. The Orthodox...

    Convertitis Revisited

If I may chip in my two cents, I think the entire issue revolves around identifying the things that are truly important.

Let The Women Keep Silent In The Churches?

I've heard it said that the women in the Church at Corinth were gossiping in the back of the Church, and that the women of that time period in general spent much time in that particular activity. Since their gossiping was a distraction to the people trying to pray, they were admonished.

    New catechumen

The Orthodox Church, by Bishop Kallistos Ware, is the de facto standard for Church introductions as far as I know. It is on the web at: Part 1: Church History http://www.synaxis.org/sschool/Orthodox_Church.html Part 2: Faith and Worship...

    One Church or Many?

See the Union of Lyons in 1274 and the Union of Florence in 1438. http://www.synaxis.org/sschool/Orthodox_Church.html#_Toc522264242 Both unions were rejected by the people. Today's movements will also be rejected by the people. Don't worry about it. :)

    Does this bother you?

Maximus, I don't agree with the ecumenical movement, and I've done my share of writing against it. However, fighting against a movement is like punching the wind. All you accomplish is knocking yourself off balance. You say that true Orthodox witness happens between individuals, and not on a...

    Does this bother you?

Omit the names if necessary, but at least identify the heretical teaching that has entered Orthodoxy through ecumenism. Do our Bishops now deny the divinity of Christ? Have talks with the Coptic churches resulted in Orthodox bishops denying Christ's two natures? Have talks with protestant...

    Does this bother you?

Maximus, Can you show me which Bishop, based on ecumenical dialog, has changed the Orthodox faith in a way that corrupts the intellectual foundation of the path to salvation? And quotes of the fathers are nice, but I need more. Why did they say what they did? The Fathers of our Church...

    help/opinions

Yikes, sounds like a tough situation. When I think about it, the words of St. Seraphim of Sarov go running through my mind: “Save yourself, and a thousand around you will be saved.” I don't think confronting them with bible verses will be profitable to anyone. Instead of trying to...

    Does this bother you?

I'm probably going to get myself in a bit of trouble here, but I feel compelled to confront this. And if anything, this week is the perfect time to discuss this topic. Remember the gospel reading of Matthew 23 during the bridegroom service. If we are to guide ourselves as Maximus instructs...

How much time do you spend in prayer?

I think there is one option missing on the poll that might be relevant here: I set aside a X amount of time to pray and I pray when I can. I've known people whose hearts were with God long after the formal prayers had come to a close.
