  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Need wise, biblical counsel

I said guilt because I was thinking of the verses that say "But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil...Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the...

    Long winded prayers

We are also told to "pray without ceasing". And "will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?" Everything needs to be taken in context.

    Is the death penalty un-Christian?

I understand your logic, but I don't think that is what BroIgnatious is saying. By definition, a penalty and a punishment are synonymous, and since he agrees with the teachings of the Catechism on the issue, it kinda seems like a moot point. It also seems like you are picking a fight for no reason.

Why do I find Christians unlike the Christ?

I get it. Even St. Francis said "Preach Jesus, and if necessary use words". If our actions don't reflect our faith, then our words aren't going to convince anybody. But you said that you follow Jesus' commands. Which ones? What about this command? "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For...

    Need wise, biblical counsel

You could very well be right, but it's a pretty big assumption to make since you don't know my whole story or the history of my relationship with Christ or even what sins I was guilty of. I'll take it under advisement, though. I don't think more guilt is really what I need right now, but if...

    Need wise, biblical counsel

Thank you all. I'm starting to feel a little better today. I'm going to do a full examination of conscience and trust the Lord to lead.

    Is the death penalty un-Christian?

Actually, the Catechism states that it is never acceptable to execute innocents: "God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being." "Scripture specifies the prohibition...

    Is the death penalty un-Christian?

Jesus said to the men about to stone the adulteress woman "if any of you has committed no sin, let him be the first to throw a stone." I think the death penalty denies another human being the opportunity of finding redemption in this life, and I don't think humans should have that power over...

Why do I find Christians unlike the Christ?

You just said "well yeah I do". Christ's commandments are to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. If you are doing that, you can call yourself anything you want. I agree that we (Christians) can sometimes be the biggest obstacle...

    Need wise, biblical counsel

Thank you all. This experience has been really scary. I know that satan can keep us from returning by making us too afraid to return. Which means I obviously haven't been perfected in love. I just really feel like I have let God down. He has given me every kind of blessing and grace and...

The Atheists' Preference of Science over God / Humanity

God is the One who gave us brains and the capacity for logic and deductive reasoning. God is the One who created the universe scientists study. Scientists can be Christians or atheists or humanists or something else. How could God's reality possibly be threatened by science? A quest for truth...

    Need wise, biblical counsel

Hi - I have been backsliding for a while now and fell into a season of sin. I have tried to surrender to and love God most of my adult life - at least I think I have. I have experienced wonderful times of peace and grace and blessing, but I think I've really taken it all for granted. I really...

I've been trying to stop drinking. Something in me wants to continue. Something in me wants to stop.

Hi Brian. Something prompted me to join this forum out of the blue this morning. Now I realize why. I'm dealing with exactly the same issue. Every morning I read my Bible and pray fervently for deliverance from this affliction, determined not to drink, go to work and feel like crap all day, and...
