  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

"James, the Brother of Jesus" by Robert H. Eisenman

Haven't read it. From the description, it sounds like liberal thological deconstructionism in the vein of the "Historical Jesus" movement and the "Jesus Seminar". The folks who write that stuff have an axe to grind and I don't put much stock in them.

    Talking to the devil?

Once, on the advice of a Baptist pastor I addressed the devil while in prayer, invoking the name of Christ to bind him, almost as if I was performing an exorcism. I didn't find it to be either disasterous or particularly effective, and the tempo of spiritual opposition in my life ticked up a...

Here in the US we would call that person Dan Ackroyd. ;)

    Once saved always saved?

Just thought I'd crash this thread. I hope you guys don't mind. First, do these verses refer to salvation? Second, assuming that they do, they very expicitly teach that it is impossible to regain your salvation once it is lost. Does anyone believe this?

    A rejection of Predestination.........

It also helps to keep in mind that the word "know" should be properly interpreted to have te same weight as in the phrase "and Adam knew his wife". Adam wasn't merely aware of Eve's existence, rather he had deep affection and connection with her. ;) So too, God foreKNEW us. A certain commentator...

    Bible Version ?

I use the NASB for study and the ESV for a reading bible. I don't personally care for the NIV or the NRSV, but that is just me, and I still use them sometimes. When I'm feeling especially scholarly (or just anachronistic and cranky), I read the KJV1611 or the Geneva. The only bible I would...

    Reformed

Then you might be an Amyraldian, depending upon how orthodox your understanding of the remaining four points are. To make it (overly) simple, there are different "flavors" of Calvinism. These depend on the order that one assigns to the decrees of God. In classical Calvinism, also known as...

    Reformed

Good question. Many people claim that all 5 points are required, but Amyraldians ("4-point Calvinists" who reject Limited Atonement) are often considered to be Reformed. Other than them, individuals who claim 4 or fewer points generally reject or redefine the core principle of Reformed thought...

    A rejection of Predestination.........

LOL...POSTdestination. Cute. I am interested if anyone can produce a scripture in support of the notion of post-destination (i.e. that God foresees our choice of Him and responds by choosing us). So far the ONLY candidate I have seen is Romans 8:29, although this hinges on the...

Have you always been a Calvinist or did you convert?

My pastor describes himself as a Calvinist, but he rejects limited atonement; more tellingly, he believes in the Wesleyan theory of election, i.e. God foresaw our choices and elected us based on that foresight. He admits in private that no scripture explicitly teaches this doctrine but he still...

Yup, he writes under the pseudonym "Norman Geisler"... :P
