  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

Comparisons to corporations aside, can we at least stop to acknowledge the fact that you're posting on the very thread that is currently trying to discuss a big solution to the efficiency problem?

I'm in too deep, man. I've already got a 13 page long thread on Basic Income. Save yourself.

    GE CEO: Obamacare Hurting Business

Thing is, profits aren't declining. The complaint is that they're not going up as dramatically as expected. It's like your expecting to get a $5k raise after finishing a project and only getting $4,700. Like stealing food right out of your mouth, eh?

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

Injecting my own arguments into this, you've touched on one of the ideas behind BI. We have dozens of different government agencies to deal with poverty and homelessness specifically. Not to mention things like corporate welfare and minimum wage, among any number of other laws passed in an...

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

It's coercive, rather than compelling. And now everyone has a chance to step down if they don't want to work and let those that do step in. That is both inhumane and naive. The entire point here is that desperation is the worst possible reason to have someone take up jobs. If they don't want...

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

The money is coming from a mix of tax hikes (In the form of the adoption of flat taxes and code simplifications, and , most importantly, cuts to programs. You pay for a variety of welfare programs as it stands. Not to mention things like Social security on top of that. Thing is, though. We spend...

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

Again, you shouldn't have to earn a basic living. You want shelter, food, running water, power, and communication? We're at an age where that can and should be the given. You want to go out, eat out, buy that new dress, go to the movies, get that new videogame console? Work for it. That's what...

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

It's all because of what employers do to them currently. None, that's the point. A free market doesn't compel people to do anything for any reason other than the sheer desire to make more money. That is the idea of capitalism: Everyone wants to make more money. As I said to a previous...

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

What's important is what you consider yourself, really. Look at the issue this way:Most people will be smart and at least try using it to live. They could do absolutely nothing with it and just let it sit in the bank and it would still help the economy because it allows banks more money to loan...

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

Do you know what a "welfare trap" is? Paying taxes is a citizen's duty. There's really no two ways about that. Regardless of how much you think we're "robbing" from Peter, Paul needs it. Peter needs someone to buy his goods, and Paul needs a roof over his head. You seem to have an issue with...

I fail to see how that statement is relevant to the discussion at hand.

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

When you have no choice but to keep a job, what ends up happening is that you are vulnerable to all sorts of mistreatment including abuse, wage theft, fraud, overwork, etc. If you don't see the problem with that, I'm going to need you to leave this thread. We're not going to get anywhere if you...

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

How It's Made: Bread - YouTube I'm confused by where you're coming from with this. Do you not like welfare? So you think literally nobody stopped and said "Wow, I have no money, can't get a job ... I need to make money somehow." Then turn to drugs, robbery, etc? This keeps popping up. It's...

Let's talk about Universal Basic Income

They're produced in mass quantities by an ever shrinking pool of people. Really, we're at the age where a handful of farmers can produce enough food for thousands. Productivity is way up. Well it depends what angle we're coming at this from. From a social point of view, you have people...
