  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is sexuality and nudity a part of the original sin?

Such comments put me in mind of the late, great Dave Allen (Irish comedian, raconteur, and atheist) and his wonderful gag about nose knickers!

Teacher's comment, "Evidence for the Resurrection"

You should have immediately asked him to state where the evidence for this claim existed and where such a claim had been peer reviewed in a reputable scientific/academic journal.

    Oh dear, Richard Dawkins

I fail to comprehend your reasoning, nor do I think it wise to use anthropormorphic allusions when discussing the existence, or otherwise, of a supreme being. How can an omniscient supreme being give anything the capacity to do anything without foreknowledge of what it will do? The assumption...

    Oh dear, Richard Dawkins

From your above comment I am forced to the conclusion that 'If this supreme being created everthing then it must also have created evil'. That then leads me to ask: 'Can something that claims to be pure goodness create evil'? In order to create evil this supreme being must have a...

    Oh dear, Richard Dawkins

Well having watched the programmes I have to say that it is time Dawkins was allowed to air his opinions. Anti-theists don't use the word 'belief' the way religious individulals use it. We make our judgements on evidence. Religion relies on blind faith and myths. I particularly enjoyed Dawkins...

    Monotheism

    The latter.

It's been done, but not by me: FREE WILL

Why should Paul's word be accepted as correct? His writings are not Scripture. They are merely his opinion. If one accepts the premise that the Christian deity created everything in the Universe it follows that this same deity created evil and that raises the philosophical question "How can...

    Pick 'n' Mix Religion

Rather a dangerous stance to take surely? James Hogg's "Justified Sinner" may have felt exactly the same way! How can a mere mortal determine what is "divine"? Under such a precept the claim that "God told me to do it" would stand as a divine injunction.

    Harry Potter and Narnia

It should be remembered that Lewis was steeped in folklore and admitted that as a child he had read books that no child ought to have had access to. I don't think children pick up on the religious symbolism - I know I didn't. All I did recognise in the books was a great deal of "lifting" from...

It's been done, but not by me: FREE WILL

That sounds rather like a divine Catch 22. The deity has pre-determined everything yet we are held responsible for the choices we make? I put Epicurus to you. Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is...

    Should God Apologise?

Ah but if one accepts the doctrine of the triune deity then this god was doing it to part of itself! That is rather too sado-masochistic for my taste.

    Pick 'n' Mix Religion

If Man can arbitrate over what is good and what is bad why does he require a Deity?

    terrible sin to drink!

How the fundamentalists get round this one I do not know. The original Greek in John 2 is Οινος which is WINE. I did hear tell of one abstaining Christian who interpreted Paul's advice in 1 Timothy 5:23 to mean that the wine should be rubbed on to the stomach!

    Pick 'n' Mix Religion

As a relative newcomer to these fora I am struck by the various threads on homosexuality and the views of some Christians that inveigh against such practices. The Hebrew and Christian texts are duly cited to support such opinions. However, whenever I ask individual Christians who display such...

    Lesbians

You are yet another example of the Christian "pick and mix" approach to the Hebrew and Christian texts. If you quote Mathew to support your view on the wrongs of homosexuality why not then take the same approach towards worldy wealth? You could have the same quote from each of the Synoptics...
