    Praying to the saints...

I'm not quite sure how to word my question and please keep in mind I'm a struggling newbie at this... :) I think I always word things funny so that they're generally misunderstood. :sigh: Where did the practice of praying to saints originate from, either biblically or historically?

Please help me learn about the Eastern Orthodox church.

Thank you for starting this great thread, Cheryl! And it's wonderful about your husband. I was having a hard time on the issue of praying to saints as well. I didn't remember any references in the bible of this practice, (hence my problem with accepting it) but it makes much more sense now...

    "Real Presence" and "Symbolic Act"

Do those two things have any specific meaning in Orthodoxy? Someone mentioned it but I wasn't sure if it was referring to Communion, or Orthodoxy compared to something else, or ... Until I get the chance to speak to him again, do those phrases mean anything to anyone else?

Any one else have people in their parish who seem to dislike them for no reason?

Whew! Thought it was just me! I think the best you can do is keep smiling and saying hello, be kind, have patience, and pray for them. I can't say I've won many people over, but one lady at work used to be really snippity and curt with me, sometimes openly rude. This past week she actually...

    Bringing youth into the church

It's very encouraging to hear that your groups are touching the lives of others and that the kids are growing in their faith. Thank you so very much for your prayers!

    Bringing youth into the church

I think you speak quite well for a large group of people. :D That's very true and a lot of what you said resonates with many young people, myself included (although referring to me as "young" is debatable :P ). You have a lot of valid points and I'll be sure to bring them to the table.

    Bringing youth into the church

Wow! I really appreciate all the feedback! Unfortunately, I'm not in a place to provide more details as this group isn't part of my regular church. They're at a stage where I've seen many other churches, trying to revive a lagging youth group after the parents have stopped forcing...

    Bringing youth into the church

Hello everyone! I have a discussion group to attend this Saturday night where we will be brainstorming topics on how to introduce the younger crowds (likely ages 13-25) into the Catholic church. Any ideas?

    Vasya's apology - A short note

Vasya wanted me to briefly mention that he's currently having problems with his computer but will return as soon as possible. He apologizes for his absence and hasn't forgotten you all. :( And now back to your previously scheduled program....

    Stupid questions 101

:D I should rephrase that. I've heard of RC churches performing baptisms shortly after birth. Do orthodox churches perform baptisms on the very young or at a later age? Or is it just the chrismation? And what is a person called at that stage?

    Stupid questions 101

Was that just a metaphor or do some Orthodox churches baptize with water?
