Yes, I learned the hard way!

If you truly want to go the independent route, you can go with createspace I published both of my books with them. The biggest cost you may face is having someone edit your work and getting a nice cover done.

I would recommend Barney: a novel (about a guy called Barney) by Guy Sigley. It's humorous but leaves you with a great story. I'd also recommend searching the #CIR or #CR4U hashtags on Twitter. Those are specifically for clean books. I'd also recommend my two books, but I won't advertise them...
