Why do we know Jesus is not a literal door? Or a literal vine?

Simply because, despite Him saying he is those things, the literal interpretation contradicts reality. Which means we interpret that He was using metaphor when he said them.

It’s the same with the verses you keep quoting. How do we know they are not literal? Because they contradict the reality. And the Bible is filled with metaphors to show us who God is.

There were multiple heresies that sprang up in the early Church, many of which have made a resurgence in recent times. All were based on interpretation of Scripture.

No one reads a text without interpreting it. It impossible not to interpret God's word.

How do you interpret the following:

"Time flies like an arrow"

Does it mean that a certain species of fly absolutely love chowing down on a piece of medieval weaponry?

Does it mean that the proper method of timing flies is the same method used for timing arrows?

Does it refer to the passage of time?

All three are syntactically correct interpretations of the same text.
