  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just another leftist liberal who doesn't trust anything written in scripture.
LOL. Time, context, and paradigm.
If you want to understand the writings compiled to make the Bible(s) that last person to ask is a someone who thinks it's magical.

This makes no sense whatsoever.
If you read the anthology(s) that make up Bible(s) without strong consideration of time, as in the paradigm in which it was written; context in which they were written; one will never understand those works. I furthermore will give you two words that also need to considered since these devices were common in that time. The first is Pseudepigrapha where it was routine for writers to write under the name of someone else. The Bible(s) are wrought with that. The others is Syncretism, which also the Bible(s) are full of no different than cultures still do today.

I am a Bible scholar with a degree in Biblical literature. So, you won't dissuade me from the divine truth contained within its pages. The Bible is the most supported ancient manuscript in the world. And whatever liberal philosophy you may have and use to try and cast doubt on its veracity and authority are useless spitting into tye wind.

I am well aware of all the issues that people love to discuss. And quite often the motive for many is to cast doubt upon its divine truth. Yes understanding some of the culture of the time can be important. And if you really study scripture you can see where even the writers acknowledge cultural issues as such. That does not negate the divine universal truth and teachings within.

Such as these words.

that ye should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles: knowing this first, that in the last days mockers shall come with mockery, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they wilfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and amidst water, by the word of God; by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing that these things are thus all to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy living and godliness, looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

And I'm a rocket scientist. First, since most of the volume of scripture passed off as "support" is late as the church had scribes sit there and make copies of copies of scripture day in and day out for years, doesn't mean much. Second. The scripture you provide proves my point. It's a contextual apologetic from day one because the things promised to come to fruition never occurred. Still hasn't. So given the context of being mocked, a day becomes a thousand years to justify events to never come. It's no different than today with the invention of “double prophecy” because the prophecy as read and understood in context never happened either.

No it proves mine. We know what camp you are in.

So given the context of being mocked,

And you are still doing it.

I guess the writer of Proverbs is also correct.

He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself,
And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults.

Thanks for the conversation.

Repeating a prophecy that never came to fruition doesn't help. Nor does the writer of Peter's squabbles of who is an apostle and who is not. Again, context.

I’m very glad that you find value, comfort and certainty, in the Bible.

My own thoughts are along the lines of the Bible being an excellent ancient set-of-texts, mostly intact for a 2600 years.
Decent, (if not entirely accurate) historical record of a people who Wrote worthwhile things down, even if it shades a bit in Israel’s favor.

That’s its “worth” to me; you’ll differ in my estimation of the Bible, I’m sure.
That’s great!

And while politics got me out of religion, (that’s just gravy though), I’m ever grateful to the subject/hobby*, I do not regret my time within a church.

Thanks for caring enough to continually deal with those of us (who are guests here) who cannot find their way to believe the same things as our gracious hosts.

Have a great night/morning!
