It has nothing to do with perspective. Perspective makes things look smaller the further they are from the observer. But once something that's still large enough to be seen, like a large ship or a country, like France, is beyond the horizon, we cannot see it at all. When the sun sets, it doesn't get smaller and smaller as it gets further away from the observer. It disappears gradually below the horizon. That's not what perspective does.
